When did you first travel to Vietnam and Cambodia?
I decided to visit Vietnam in 1997. I had been asked to join a lecture tour, and I wanted to do some hands-on research. I was also cognizant that Vietnam was becoming a must-see destination, and I wanted to experience the people, the country, and the culture. Long before my opportunity to visit the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, those names evoked the exoticism of Indochina and the tragic media images of the political conflicts of the 1970s. Only recently opened to tourism, these destinations afforded the chance to glimpse some, as yet, unspoiled cultures and view examples of magnificent heritage. I was so enamored with the grace and integrity of the Vietnamese people and the beauty of the country, I returned in 1998 to visit the hill tribes of the northern highlands, having first traversed Laos north to south. Since then, I have accompanied seven shipboard expeditions through Vietnam and led a program to Laos for Zegrahm last year.
What were your initial impressions of the people you met?

The End of Civilisation
Iraq is one huge world heritage site, a unique storehouse of art and archaeology. Now the war threatens to destroy it all, says Fiachra Gibbons. A Chemical Weapon Used By the Us in the Vietnam War is Still Damaging New Generations Nearly 30 years after the Vietnam war, a chemical weapon used by US troops is still exacting a hideous toll on each new generation. Cathy Scott-Clark and Adrian Levy report. New Lease of Life for Michelangelo's Secret Drawings Experts in Florence are restoring drawings Michelangelo doodled on the walls of a cell-like room in which the artist hid for six weeks while the Medici family wanted him dead. John Lennon's childhood home opens to public The home where John Lennon grew up and wrote some of the early Beatles hits was today officially opened to the public by his widow, Yoko Ono. City of conflict Basra, Iraq's second biggest city and principal port, is no stranger to armed conflict. Its location, near the Gulf, and its prosperity have often made it a target. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 12, 1998
NASA RADAR REVEALS HIDDEN REMAINS AT ANCIENT ANGKOR
New evidence of a prehistoric civilization and remnants of ancient temples in Angkor, Cambodia have been discovered by researchers using highly detailed maps produced with data from an airborne imaging radar instrument created by NASA.
Experts say the findings, made possible by the Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (AIRSAR) developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA, may revolutionize the way archaeologists view the ancient city's development. Angkor is a vast complex of some 1,000 temples covering more than 160 square kilometers (about 60 square miles) of northern Cambodia. Little is known of the prehistoric occupation of this fertile flood plain, but at its height the city housed an estimated population of 1 million people. The famous temples were built from the 8th to 13th century AD and were accompanied by a massive hydrological system of reservoirs and canals. Today, much of the civilization of Angkor is hidden beneath a dense forest canopy and is inaccessible due to poor roads, land mines and political instability.

Welcome to 'In The Shadow of Angkor'
Summary:
Our web presentation of In The Shadow of Angkor emphasizes:
  • the continuity of Cambodian history from the days of Cambodia's powerful, empire-building kings up to today
  • the connections between art and spirituality, and the challenges of understanding the art of another culture and time
Web Highlights:
It is possible that many students know little or nothing about Cambodia. Most Americans showed little interest in the country before it became strategically important during the Vietnam War. But many of us were horrified by the revelations of what has since been termed "genocide" under the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot. Those students who read a daily newspaper will have been exposed to frequent stories since the summer (1997) of the political turmoil in the country, and the trial of Pol Pot. Sean Penn Is Not The Capital Of Cambodia
by Heather Swain

If you're going to Cambodia, here are a few things you should know:
* you can't drink the water
* you can't bring hand grenades or semi-automatic weapons into the discos
* you have to be careful about the hidden land mines
* the famed ancient city of Angkor Wat is there
* you can buy a big bag of ganja at an open market for about a buck
In Cambodia, things have a way of balancing themselves out. That's why this tiny Buddhist nation has been to hell (losing almost 1 million of its 8 million people during the brutal Khmer Rouge regime) and is now on its way back attracting tourists from all over the world.
When my friend Ben claimed that Cambodia was an amazing place, I wondered if he had ever been out of Detroit before. This is what I knew about Cambodia:
* it's somewhere in Asia
* Sean Penn is not the capital
* there was a crazy dude named Pol Pot who slaughtered everyone * there was a very depressing movie about the whole ordeal
The thought of willingly going to such a place for a vacation seemed ludicrouskind of like strolling through Central Park for a little night air. But then Ben showed me pictures of Angkor Wat, and I was smitten. Mona and I booked tickets.
