Deanne Ek (continue) was used to it from Minnesota. When I finally went to school at Polytechnic High, I saw so many Asian people. I was so surprised. I have never seen so many Asian people in one school in my whole life! I made many new Asian friends. Finally I graduated from high school and went to college. Class of '98, babeee!!! Now here I am, a sophomore in California State University of Long Beach. I started my first year as an undeclared major. Then I finally made up my mind to become a nursing major. I am hoping to graduate to become a pediatric nurse because I love to work with children. On top of that, I am the Co-Treasurer of the Cambodian Student Society of CSULB, "who could have ever thought of that!" I am very excited to take part in our "Cultural Show 2000". Being an officer will drive me to take bigger responsibility than my normal life of going to school and coming home. Tom and Chamroeun's Home Page Tom is originally from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Chamroeun is from Battambang Cambodia . Our home page shares some of our interests and background. We hope to add more as time allows. Chamroeun came to the U.S. with a Cambodian Dance group in 1981 via the Khao-I-Dang refugee camp. As one of those chosen for the troupe, Chamroeun was trained by former dancers from the Royal Ballet who had managed to escape from Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge As artistic refugees, the troupe came to the U.S. and performed for thousands of people across the country. Chamroeun is very involved in keeping the traditional court dance and culture of Cambodia alive , through teaching Cambodian classical dance and making traditional Khmer clothes costumes and crafts . He's been teaching dance and crafts to interested individuals at schools and institutions with the assistance of Samuel Fleisher Art Memorial, the Philadelphia Folklore Project, the Philadelphia Dance Alliance, and through grants from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Pew Charitable Trusts. He's also introduced Tom and his family to Cambodian culture.

Contact Us Khmer Culture Night marks growing involvement of Cambodian students and community By David Bauer APR Contributor The emcee came out on to stage and, over the excited whispering and chattering from the audience, apologetically explained that the show would begin a few minutes late. The crowd that paid attention to the apology and seemed almost delighted to have extra time to socialize. The air hummed with the excited voices of the audience, who seemed almost equally elated about seeing friends in the audience as seeing the performance. The evening of Cambodian culture exhibition was begun, after a little delay, as five ornately dressed dancers who stepped elegantly on to stage. They moved about the stage in a slow graceful and methodic manner; their brightly colored outfits were accented by delicate hand gestures as they cast rose petals on to the stage.

The crowd gathered to enjoy a day-long celebration involving religious ceremonies, traditional dances performed in ornate gilded dresses, and American chart-toppers sung in Khmer. The event is organized as a way of keeping cultural traditions alive, as well as bringing the community together, said Sophy Theam, 24, who coordinated the event. Non-Cambodians also came to the arena to get a feeling for a culture that they have grown close to. Robert Nassau, 60, and his wife Nancy Storrow, 55, drove from Putney, Vt., to attend the festival. The couple had only recently returned from Cambodia after volunteering at a hospital for a month, and while in Lowell, visited relatives of people they had met at the hospital. But Trate, watching a Cambodian American magician on stage with his children, said it was hard sometimes to bridge the two cultures.

Turn-of-the-century factories sit on side streets, some empty with broken windows, others hiding bustling businesses, government agencies, or schools. There is a mystery to these large brick buildings that is easily missed by the hurried passerby. [TOP] The Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association is located inside a newly converted factory building that spans over two New York City blocks. Now the old mill factory takes on a different history, one that includes large Khmer words, the Cambodian flag, and a photograph of the Cambodian Royal family. These emblems welcome visitors who enter the reception area. Local students run the front desk after hours. The majority of staff are Cambodian, and the students who come there after school seem involved in almost every aspect of the agency. They are a vibrant and visible presence.

A Cambodian Family Journey Cambodian Journey II Literacy Programs @PPL Cambodian Cultural Celebration Mckenna thanked the many people involved with the project such as Pich Chhoeun, of the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island, Jennifer Frisbee, the project website developer, and parents Seney and Tee Chheng, for their outstanding commitment, assistance with food, and translation expertise. Jennifer Frisbee projected the project's exciting web pages for all to see. Designed by children and teens with her assistance, these pages chronicle the unique journey made by this group of diverse Cambodian-Americansan exchange between generations, cultures and languages. It celebrates many aspects of Cambodian culture and Cambodian-American society. The Providence Public Library is among 12 other libraries in the United States that have been awarded a grant from MetLife Foundation and Libraries for the Future: Reading America Project. Due to the success of the project, this grant will be renewed in 2003. Libraries for the Future (LFF) is a non-profit organization based in New York City that works with libraries to enhance community literacy programming, reach diverse populations, and promote intergenerational understanding. Hopefully, it will be the beginning of future collaborations with LFF and the MetLife Foundation that will work with other diverse populations in the city of Providence.

Most adults consider children who express their opinions to be vain and the elders feel that allowing children to participate in discussions is a nuisance, according to Eang Nha, an official of the local human rights organization Licadho. The punishment that accompanies the act of speaking out discourages children from expressing themselves, he added. Many children said they were not brave enough to talk to visitors who come to their home or others whom they meet outside. - I just say, How do you do? when I meet visitors, said Heang Keatha, a 10-year-old girl. - I dare not speak to them. I am afraid. Another 14 year-old girl said: When a visitor comes to my house, I just give a greeting, and I walk away because my mother told me to do that when I was young. Bhandari, Indias former Ambassador to Cambodia (1991-94), is perhaps the latest monograph on Angkor Wat, the vast medieveal temple complex in Cambodia. Built as the glorious shrine of Hindu God Vishnu by the Khmer king Surayavaraman II (1113-1150), Angkor Wat reveals the grandest of South-East Asian architectural expressions. Bhandari's interest in the study of Angkor Wat complex as an official representative of India was basically inspired by the involvement of the Government of India in the conservation of this great mediaeval monument. The writer deserves our thanks primarily for the reason that in spite of his heavy diplomatic duties as Indian Ambassador to Cambodia, he could produce this well-written and well-illustrated book which would serve as a lasting medium to bind together the two nations, Cambodia and India. The author has not only recalled the pleasant memories of Indo-Cambodian culture links centuries ago, but also provided details of India's efforts to preserve Cambodia's most outstanding monument in Angkor Wat.
