Cameroon Time and Date Cameroon Culture Back to Top Each major ethnic group of the country has developed its own culture. The vigorous rhythms played on the drums by the people of the southern forest region contrast with the flute music of northern Cameroonians. In the Adamawa area, the Muslim Fulani produce elaborately worked leather goods and ornate calabashes (gourds used as containers), and the Kirdi and the Matakam of the western mountains produce distinctive types of pottery. The powerful masks of the Bali, which represent elephants' heads, are used in ceremonies for the dead, and the statuettes of the Bamileke are carved in human and animal figures. The Tikar people are famous for beautifully decorated brass pipes, the Ngoutou people for two-faced masks, and the Bamum for smiling masks. L'Institut Français d'Afrique Noire (French Institute of Black Africa) maintains a library in Douala that specializes in the sociology, ethnology, and history of Africa. Of the several museums, the Diamare and Maroua Museum has anthropological collections relating to the Sudanese peoples, and the Cameroon Museum of Douala exhibits objects of prehistory and natural history.

Myth has it that Cameroon supporters are colourful, drum-beating people, dancing to the rhythms of the western African republic. When one thinks of Africa, one is automatically transported to black-magic wielding dancers and masters of “juju”.
And it is true. Cameroon is no exception – indeed, before the opening match against Ireland in Niigata on Japan’s western coast, I was confronted by one so-called witch-doctor, running up and down the aisle, vicious fangs in his mouth, the green, red and yellow of our national flag trailing him.
Drums beat throughout the game, where the Europeans and South Americans sing. Africa is not a singing continent, at least not when it comes to football. Drums, and beautiful Cameroonian ladies in traditional colours, dancing to the entrancing rhythms – this is what football in Cameroon is all about. It is a different style completely to all-European games.
Ever since Roger Milla scored his two goals against Colombia in Italia 1990 to put the Indomitable Lions into a quarter-final clash with England, Cameroon has been expected to perform, yet has always underachieved.

Tell us about the country you are from?

The people of Cameroon are wonderful and receptive - especially when they see someone such as myself as passionate about the Indomitable Lions as they are. There is a sense of national pride that is given to them by the national team, and when the Lions win, the whole country erupts into celebration. Music blares out from the shanty huts that house so many of the population, and there are smiles on the faces of people who walk down the street. These are things that are not found in the west.
What 3 things do you value most?
My cat, Kahukura (a silver tabby who came with me to the USA from Taiwan, and then returned to Taiwan with me, collecting more frequent flyer miles than me), my passion for football and my passion for Africa
How will you follow the world cup? I will be at the World Cup in Japan at all Cameroon games, and will be noticeable as the white guy in the Cameroon shirt, with green, red and yellow hair, draped in the Cameroon flag. Things that I feel will be impossible to overlook.

Culture in the Neighbourhood Yaounde (Cameroon) - Strasbourg (France) A cultural visit over a 2-month period was organized for one of the leading artists of Yaounde, Pascal Kemfack, to Strasbourg, France in the first half of 1999. This visit has allowed the painter and sculptor to discover the work of his collegues in France and to share with them his experiences in Cameroon. A dance workshop in the Mvo-Ada neighbourhood has produced an educational show entitled "Ezezam" about drugs and violence among young people in the neighbourhoods of Yaoundé. This production will be performed later at the National Festival of the Arts and Culture, the Market of the African Performing Arts in Abidjan and the Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Africa in Yaoundé.

People and Culture of Mount Cameroon The population in the region (about 300,000 people) is made up of the indigenous Bakweri, Bomboko and Balondo tribes and immigrant population from other parts of Cameroon and neighbouring countries like Nigeria. The local community especially in the towns is therefore diverse and complex with a mixture of cultures and the dynamics of modern society. Agriculture, fishing and harvesting forest products are key livelihoods occupations for the rural population. The Bakweri people belong to a group called Bantus. They have been living around Mount Cameroon for at least 4000 years. Today, there are 85 Bakweri villages of various sizes, located between 500 and 1000m above sea level as a result of the German plantations, which forced the coastal Bakweri villages up the mountain. With one family occupying most villages, there was no need for strong political authority. The elders gave executive orders and judged in cases of dispute. The position of village head is a European creation. The Germans and British installed the position of paramount-chief as an intermediary in their system of indirect rule. After independence, these 'traditional' rulers are still being used in the same way, paid by the ruling party in Cameroon. Social organisations among the Bakweris are strongly based on various secret societies. The most important groups for men are Male and Nganya, while women organise themselves in the Liengu and Malowa (Maloa) secret societies.
