Merit Award Winners Announced at e-Content Industry's Annual Gala Dinner Toronto, March 26, 2002 The Canadian e-Content Award Winners were announced at the e-Content industry's prestigious Gala Dinner on the evening of March 25th. Launched in 1996, the Canadian Online Product Awards, as they were then known, were developed to recognize and honour e-content products and services used by Canadian organizations and individuals. A panel of industry experts and users of e-content products for Canadians decided this year's winners, after months of deliberation. "We had an excellent array of products to evaluate, and the competition was fierce this year," said Juanita Richardson, Chairperson of the Judging Committee. "The winning products are those that display especially high levels of innovation, vision, functionality, ease of use, market fit and content."

Here's what some of Canada's top tech fund managers are buying anadian Business's annual Tech 100 tells you a lot about Canadian high-tech companies-which has the most revenue, which makes money and which loses the most. But it doesn't tell you the whole story. Which of Canada's tech companies, for instance, are a good bet for investors trying to pick their way through a stock market minefield? We talked to portfolio managers at some of the country's biggest and best-performing science and tech mutual funds about their top choices in the sector. As it turns out, there are still a few Canadian tech firms that can make you money after all. Robert McWhirter
    Triax Investment Management Inc.
Robert McWhirter, vice-president and portfolio manager at Triax Investment Management Inc., has a name for the quantitative model he uses to pick stocks in the tech sector: Einstein. While McWhirter's model may not be quite as well known as the theory of relativity, the name does get to the nub of his investment strategy-comparing the relative earnings growth of tech stocks with their relative trading values. "I'm screening for the most attractive stocks given what the earnings estimates are and what price-to-earnings multiple they're trading at in relation to everyone else," he says. McWhirter has seen a fair bit of success in the beat-up tech world. The Northwest Specialty Innovations fund he manages on behalf of Northwest Mutual Funds Inc., for example, returned 17.59% in the six months ended April 30, while the Nasdaq index lost 0.12%.

If it can stay a few steps ahead, Mad Catz has a shot at blasting holes in first-party sales. After all, when you're working the controls for Lara Croft, you want a device that really lets you kick back on the couch.
