Construction Numbers Up
Development in Mississauga continues to climb through 2001. After the first eight months, the value of construction permits issued by the City has hit the $1.17 bilion mark which is an increase of 29 per cent over the same period last year. This is the fifth consecutive year that Mississauga's construction figures have exceeded the $1 billion mark. With the population increasing by 15,000 people per year and the expansion of Pearson International Airport further attracting industrial and commercial development; competitive tax and utility rates help maintain the city's attraction. The industrial-commercial figures are at $394,568,000, while housing construction figures are $655,380,000. Both are up from the end of August 2000. There have been 74 industrial-commercial buildings started this year compared to 43 over the same time frame last year. Housing units started this year are 3,983 contrasted with 3,138 last year.
Incentives for Small Business
The experience of developed European countries confirms that small business is an incentive for development and employment in general. Small companies easily adapt to requirements of the market, achieve more success with less investment and record constant growth of employment.

Vent, support, debate, or comment by giving us your feedback Trade Tensions The seed industry deserves a lot of credit for working with plant health restrictions, securing credit, and meeting foreign seed standards. Generally the industry has taken a pro-trade stance and supported initiatives to extend the capacity for fair, open trade. In the current environment, though, it is hard not to be alarmed at the challenges faced by open trade. The current round of World Trade Organization (WTO) agricultural negotiations seems to be going nowhere. The U.S. Farm Bill seems to have anchored a new surge of agricultural subsidies. Biotechnology and mixed reaction to it has effectively created trade barriers; plus, the current Biosafety Protocol will not ease the challenges of moving seed.
