Canadian Culture and Heritage
Canadian culture is the combination of our stories in poetry, prose and song. It is our stories and our heritage that project who we are to ourselves and to the world. Our government has taken initiatives to cultivate and protect Canada's culture and arts but we must do more. We must support these initiatives and make them a priority just as we make healthcare and education priorities. Our culture defines who we are and in a global economy where countries have become interdependent economically it is necessary for us to distinguish ourselves as Canadian and be proud of it. As a member of the Senate, my general mandate is to attend to the country's business. The special mission that I have given myself is to champion the diverse culture and heritage of Canada. I want to promote the development of quality Canadian cultural content and ensure all Canadians have access to this content. To further this mission, I accepted my nomination as Chair of the National Advisory Board of Canadian Culture Online , "a funding program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Our goal is to stimulate the development of, and access to, quality Canadian cultural content on the Internet in both official languages.

M ulticulturalism Newcomers to multicultural Canada are encouraged to maintain their homeland's culture and language, unlike most countries, where they are expected to blend into the existing socio-cultural fabric. Although participating in your ethnic community is understandable, adjusting successfully to life in Canada is easier if you involve yourself in mainstream Canadian activities. B ilingualism Canada is officially bilingual. The federal government works in the two official languages - English and French. H uman Rights Canada and its provinces have human rights laws to protect people against discrimination on the basis of race, sex, skin colour, disability, or sexual orientation. If you feel you have been denied a job, place to live, or service in a restaurant or hotel for any of these reasons, you can complain to national or provincial human rights commissions. Racial violence, child and spousal abuse, assault and threats of assault are against the law in Canada. You can call the police if you or your child experience these injustices.

Images Canada Puts Canadian Culture Online
Ottawa, June 25, 2001 - Fascinating Canadian images dating from the end of the 18th century through the late 1990s from online collections across the country are only a few clicks away through the new Images Canada site ( imagescanada.ca Hosted by the National Library of Canada, Images Canada is a collaborative project among a variety of cultural institutions that provides a single access point for the image collections on the Web sites of participating cultural institutions. With over 65 000 images indexed - with more coming soon - the images celebrate Canadian events, people, places and things. According to Roch Carrier, National Librarian, "We wanted to provide a single window through which Canadians can find and enjoy the Canadian images that are being made available online by libraries, museums and archives across Canada. The site includes photographs, illustrations, caricatures - something for everyone!" Now at the end of the first phase of the project, Images Canada currently provides access to the online image collections of the Canada Science and Technology Museum, Natural Resources Canada’s Earth Sciences Information Centre, the Glenbow Library and Archives, the National Library of Canada, and the Toronto Public Library. Interesting historical images have stories to tell. As Susan Kooyman, archivist at the Glenbow Archives notes: "One of the vast collection of Glenbow images accessible through Images Canada shows Yellow Horse, a Blackfoot (Siksika) Chief. You can clearly see the details of the Treaty medal he is wearing with pride. The Medal dates from the signing of Treaty 7 at Blackfoot crossing in 1877."

Last summer, my friend came to visit. And I was blown away.
I was blown away.
We could end up with a generation that has never seen the inside of an art gallery, a nature museum or a live performance.
Why would they go? They can get the Coles Notes version in their classroom or better yet, the comfort of their home.
Or maybe everything works perfectly and the thumbnail reproduction staring back at you is all you need to feel cultured.
That would blow me away.

Canada has long prided itself on being a multicultural society, a place where the world feels at home.
Every day, we can experience the diversity of which we are so proud.

So, my challenge to you is to step away once in a while from mainstream artistic endeavors.
Learn to accept and enjoy different cultural influences on art.
You will be able to view your old favourites with a new perspective.
You may find a new art form to love. Even if you return to more common artistic expressions, you will find yourself enriched by the experience.
I will never forget the first time I saw Chocolat. No, not the Oscar best picture nominee but the 1988 film directed by Claire Denis. Chocolat is set in a French colony in West Africa in the days when colonialism was beginning to lose its grip. The film is a subtle as it is beautiful and denies the audience a sugar-coated melodrama of love beating the odds like most Hollywood dramas.

Canadian Culture I was recently asked about Canadian Culture - things people would want to know before visiting Canada. Simple enough question if you come from a country with a cultural history, but what about Canada? Italy, Germany, Japan, India, and many other countries all have well defined cultures steeped in hundreds if not thousands of years of traditions, customs and language. For most adults, just mentioning Chinese culture brings to mind any number of mental images, which clearly define for the person what Chinese culture means to them. But what about Canadian Culture? Our original settlers still maintain their culture as they have known it for over 5,000 years, but the
