By Nesreen Sarras Canadian Tourism Expenditures Rose in 1999 Overall tourism expenditures totalled $18.3 billion in the third quarter of 1999 up 6% from the same period last year, according to the National Tourism Indicators (NTI) released by Statistics Canada.
  • At $11.7 billion in the third quarter, domestic spending accounted for nearly two-thirds of the entire demand a 6.1% increase from the same period in 1998.
  • Domestic expenditures are on the rise. This can be attributed to the continued effect of the Canadian/US dollar exchange rate, the strength of the Canadian economy and the range of tourism products of solid value being offered by the industry across the country.
The travel deficit (which occurs when citizens spend more money outside of their own country than international visitors spend when they visit it) declined by 42.1 per cent to $1.4 billion in the first nine months of 1998, down from $2.4 billion during the same period in 1997. This, in combination with last year's rise in tourism expenditures, bodes well for Canada's tourism sector this year. The NTI measures tourism employment in Canada, and reported a 0.6% increase to 543,600 people in third-quarter 1999. The NTI was initiated by CTC/ Statistics Canada to measure tourism and its socio-economic significance for Canada.
