Here are some basic tips that can help you find statistics and business information on a specific market or industry.
Visit industry association websites. The sites may contain results of research studies carried out by the association.
Consult and visit the websites of leading trade publications. Research results may be posted on the sites. If you're having trouble finding industry publications, consult the SRDS (Standard Rate and Data) website. They have an online Media Kit that provides a detailed listing of American publications. For Canadian industry trade publications, consult the CARD (Canadian Advertisers Rates and Data) website. Visit the websites of leading companies, within a given industry. Sometimes they conduct industry research and post their results, or use the findings to demonstrate how their product or service can be used as a solution to a problem.
Consult government websites to find various data on their key industries, economic conditions, census numbers and demographics. You can find direct links to key Canadian provincial government websites, by visiting our '

  • What is an index?
Q 1. What does GDP mean? The Gross Domestic Product is the final value of all goods and services produced in an economy in a given year. GDP takes all factors of the economy into account and is thus a key indicator of the Canadian economy. GDP may be calculated in terms of earnings (all revenues earned within the borders) or based on expenditures (all expenditures made within the borders) for the four following economic agents: households, businesses, governments and the external sector. It may be calculated in current (market) dollars or in constant (real) dollars. Top Q 2. Why use current and constant dollars? Although the dollar's purchasing power or value may rise or fall over time, the appearance of such fluctuations may be eliminated by determining constant (real) dollar value.
For example, statistics may suggest wages have considerably risen over a given period. However, if prices have also risen substantially, the purchasing power of each dollar earned may have declined. To determine how far real wages (as compared to cash wages) have risen, they must be expressed in dollars the value of which is constant over time-in other words, in constant dollars.
The constant dollar is used to measure variations in the dollar's real value over time. The constant dollar is the real value of a current dollar compared with a dollar's value in a specific reference year.
