Shingo Fukushima, Tokyo, grandson of Consul Sugimura
The inauguration of formal ties between Japan and Canada began with the establishment of the Japanese Consulate in Vancouver. Opened on June 22, 1889, the Consulate was the first Japanese government mission in Canada.
Headed by Consul Fukashi Sugimura, the first office was located in a rented two-story residence on Howe Street, a part of the block now occupied by the Metropolitan Hotel. Photo courtesy:
Masao Morisaku, of Los Angels, great grandson of Manzo Nagano
Official immigration from Japan commenced 10 years later in 1887 with the opening of a regular steamship service between Yokohama and Japan. This gave rise to a gradual increase in the number of Japanese crossing the pacific. But with a majority of would-be immigrants intent on landing in the United States, the Japanese immigrant population in Vancouver remained small until the turn of the century - a mere 200 residents when the Consulate opened in 1889.

"The Past in Prime Time: Canadian History, the
CBC/SRC, and the National Archives" by Monica MacDonald, CBC/SRC Project Researcher and Archives Coordinator Canadian history is boring and not fit for popular attention. This is the recent musing of a Globe and Mail journalist who concluded by announcing Canada’s dramatic equivalents to Napoleon and Lincoln — the Manitoba Schools Question, and the Reciprocity Debate of 1911. Such comparisons highlight the need for a greater awareness of our nation’s past — a familiar rant to those employed in the country’s archives, museums, and universities. The challenge is in transmitting to the general public, that our history is indeed relevant, interesting, and yes, exciting. To that end, the National Archives entered into a unique collaboration with the CBC/Radio-Canada which saw the culmination, beginning in autumn 2000, of a thirty hour television documentary series entitled Canada: A People’s History Le Canada: Une Histoire Populaire . By providing office space and support to a project staffer and facilitating access to its collections, the Archives exemplified the type of co-operation necessary to bring such an ambitious project to fruition. This unprecedented series aims to make Canadian history accessible and engaging to a vast audience and by doing so, showcases the documentary, visual, and material treasures of the National Archives, as well as of other archives, museums, and libraries across the country.

Canadian Eskimo Dog Team History With a formidable past and sometimes, an uncertain future, this Canadian Kennel Club recognised breed has survived as one of Canada's only indigenous dog breeds for over 2000 years. Closely related to the Greenland dog, and deriving from the Thule Inuit Culture of the Canadian North and Greenlandthe Canadian Eskimo Dog has been called by many names throughout historyGronlandshund, Inuit Husky, and by the InuitQimmiq... A proud breed by any name, this breed has survived in some of the harshest terrain in the world, sharing the struggle, and later the accomplishments, of its human counterparts in survival and adventure. Eskimo dogs have served nearly all the famous names in arctic and Antarctic exploration. Beautiful, proud, loyal and kind, the Canadian Eskimo Dog (CED) was historically a draft animal and all around worker. The breed was used for sledding and packing, and also as a hunting dog for the Inuit. In some parts of the Canadian North these dogs are still found sniffing out seal-breathing holes or holding the polar bear at bay during hunts. It would be hard to envision the ancient Inuit people coping with the polar conditions without these dogs.
