EXERCISE 6 AGE AND SEX COMPOSITION OF THE CANADIAN POPULATION, 1981 back to Pop page Population pyramids are a very useful way to illustrate the age and sex composition of a country's population. This data can not only give a tremendous amount of information about Canada's present population, but also about our population many years into the future. An accurate pyramid presents a great deal of information that can greatly assist planners and politicians prepare for the future. The three basic forms of population pyramids are illustrated below. In an UNDERDEVELOPED pyramid there is a very broad base of population but by the late 20's the pyramid narrows significantly with a very small percentage at the top of the pyramid. With a DEVELOPED pyramid there is a broad base of young population but the pyramid gets fatter in the teens, twenties and older. It begins to narrow in the forties with a bigger percentage in older age categories than an undeveloped country pyramid.
