Your child has recently been diagnosed with cancer. As you adjust to this information and caring for him/her at home, consider the following general instructions. Dental care Check with your child's hematologist/oncologist before you take your child to the dentist. Medications
  • Only give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol®). Do not give your child aspirin, any medicine that contains aspirin (Contac®), ibuprofen, or any medicine that contains ibuprofen (Advil®).
  • Do not continue your child's immunization program (baby shots) until the hematologist says you may. Your child should not be in the household with a child who has received a live vaccine (oral polio or MMR [measles-mumps-rubella]) in the last 30 days. Siblings can receive a "killed form" of the polio vaccine (which is a shot) that is safer for the child getting chemotherapy.
Safety tips
  • Avoid crowds or persons who have an active infection when your child's blood count (ANC) is low. Your child's doctor will let you know when you need to take extra precautions to protect your child from infection.

  • Ovarian cancer, the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women.
  • Ovarian cancer occurs in 1 out of 57 women.
  • It is expected that 25,400 women will be diagnosed with the disease in 2003.
  • An estimated 14,300 American women will die from ovarian cancer in 2003.
  • Currently, 50 percent of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer die from it within five years; among African-American women only 48 percent survive five years or more.
Ovarian cancer is very treatable when it is detected early, but the vast majority of cases are not diagnosed until the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries.
  • In cases where ovarian cancer is detected before it has spread beyond the ovaries, more than 90 percent of women will survive longer than five years.
  • Only 25 percent of ovarian cancer cases in the U.S. are diagnosed in the early stages.

Breast Cancer. What Is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is a malignant tumor thathas developed from cells of the breast. Inflammatory breast cancer

    Breast Cancer
    What Is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that has developed from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men can get it, too. The remainder of this document refers only to breast cancer in women.
    Normal Breast Structure
The female breast is made up mainly of lobules (milk-producing glands), ducts (milk passages that connect the lobules to the nipple), and stroma (fatty tissue and connective tissue surrounding the ducts and lobules, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels). Lymphatic vessels are like veins, except that they carry lymph instead of blood. Lymph is a clear fluid that contains tissue waste products and immune system cells (cells that are important in fighting infections). Lymph nodes are small bean-shaped collections of immune system cells that are found along lymphatic vessels. Cancer cells can enter lymphatic vessels and spread to lymph nodes. Most lymphatic vessels in the breast connect to lymph nodes under the arm (axillary lymph nodes). Some lymphatic vessels connect to lymph nodes inside the chest (internal mammary nodes) and either above or below the collarbone (supra- or infraclavicular nodes).

There will be an estimated 157,400 deaths from lung cancer in 2001, accounting for 28% of all cancer deaths. Description Risk Factors Detection Staging ... Further Info What is Lung Cancer? The lungs are two sponge-like organs found in the chest cavity. The right lung has three sections, called lobes. The left lung has two lobes. It is smaller because the heart takes up more room on that side of the body. The lungs bring air in and out, taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide gas, a waste product of the body. The lining, which surrounds the lungs and helps to protect them and to facilitate the sliding motion during respiration, is called the pleura. The chest cavity is called the pleural cavity. The trachea (windpipe) brings air down into the lungs. It divides into tubes called the bronchi, which divide into smaller branches called the bronchioles. At the end of the bronchioles are tiny air sacs known as alveoli.
Common Types of Lung Cancer Lung cancer is usually divided into two major types. The first type is small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The second type is non-small cell lung cancer NSCLC. Sometimes a lung cancer may have characteristics of both types. This is called mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma.

There is a lot for you to think about when choosing the best way to treat or manage your cancer. You may feel that you need to make a decision quickly. But give yourself time to absorb the information you have learned. Talk to your cancer care team. Look at the list of questions at the end of this piece to get some ideas. Then add your own. Description Risk Factors Detection Staging ... Further Info You may want to get a second opinion. Your doctor should not mind your doing this. In fact, some insurance companies require you to get a second opinion. You may not need to have tests done again since the results can often be sent to the second doctor. If you are in an HMO (health maintenance organization), find out about its policy concerning second opinions. Each type of treatment has benefits and drawbacks. There may be side effects. Your age, your overall health, and the stage and grade of your cancer are all factors to consider. Surgery, radiation, and hormone treatment are the most common treatments for prostate cancer. Chemotherapy may be used in some cases, and watchful waiting, though not actually a treatment, may be an option for some men. Each of these approaches is explained below. Local Treatment Surgery The two most common surgical procedures for treating prostate cancer are radical prostatectomy and

Patient Information Breast Cancer General Information WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? Every year, thousands of women are told that they have breast cancer. It affects women of all ages, races and social classes. It is very common; about one in twelve women over the course of their lifetime will have the disease in the U.K. Being told you have breast cancer is very frightening. It is a condition which is very difficult to understand and has a bewildering number of different treatments.
This booklet has been written especially for you and your family. It provides some information about the disease and its treatment. We hope it will help you and your family to understand the disease and the types of treatment available. WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?
The breasts are made up of many glands which are lined by tiny building blocks called cells, which can produce milk. For a reason that is not yet properly understood, sometimes one of these cells gets out of control and it can then produce a lump or tumour. In some women it can take a very long time for the tumour to appear - usually three or four years, sometimes even longer than that.
Tumours can be either benign or malignant. Benign (or innocent) tumours remain growing in one area and cannot spread. Malignant tumours are made of cancer cells which can spread to other parts of the body through the blood stream or the lymphatic system (this is explained later). There they can form new tumours called a recurrence, secondaries or metastases.
