L IVER C ANCER
Cancer of the liver is much more prevalent in many of the developing countries than in the industrialized world. Its incidence is highest in subSaharan Africa, China, southern Asia, and Japan (the exception among industrialized countries).
China alone accounts for about 45% of the world's cases. The liver is subject to two principal types of cancer. One originates in liver cells, and a history of infection with the hepatitis B virus predisposes to this.
The other originates in cells of the bile ducts. A predisposition to develop this form of cancer is caused by infestation with the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis and related parasites.
The geographic distribution of these parasites is reflected in the prevalence of this disease.
Alcoholism has not been shown to be a major predisposing factor. Other cancers in the developing world are associated with indigenous infectious agents and with cultural practices.
Betel nut chewing, for example, is linked with high rates of oral cancer in central and southeast Asia and Kashmir; Bantu natives, who hold warming pans of charcoal against their bodies, are subject to cancers of the abdominal wall.
The frequent occurrence of esophageal cancer has been related to the consumption of very hot beverages in some cultures. Burkitt's lymphoma, which occurs almost exclusively in central Africa and New Guinea, is probably caused by the Epstein-Barr virus in genetically predisposed individuals. Bladder cancer is a common problem in North Africa, and especially Egypt, because infestation with the parasite Schistosoma haematobium induces

I've stopped calling it a clique, and now call it a network. it's not a clique becasue I don't descriminate. Anyone can join and put up a ribbon. This site is for all. Please take the time to read everything I've written here, since it explains why I've created this site, and more info that I think is important to Support the Fight . Please enjoy your stay.
Introduction...
In May of 2000, I found out my dad had colon cancer. It was a very scary and hard time for me and for my family. He had an operation to remove the tumor. However, due to the fact that it had started to spread, he had to have chemothereapy and radiation treatments. He finished his treatments in Februray of 2001, and has luckily been in remission ever since. This past summer (August 2001) we found out that a sore he had on his left shoulder (that had been growing for quite some time) was a form of skin cancer. He had an operation in August and had it removed. Luckily, it did not spread too much, and was not a bad form of skin cancer. Since then there have been no signs of that cancer either.
I decided to create this clique 0n October 8th of 2001 as soon as I found out it was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I observed that not many people have ribbons on their sites. And, frankly, neither did I. So while drawing a little ribbon for myself, I figured I would make this clique, and make it easy for people come together for this cause.

Introduction
This booklet is prepared by the staff of the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Special Health Issues. Our office works with patients diagnosed with life-threatening diseases including cancer, AIDS and Alzheimer's disease. Cancer patients and their family members are frequently in search of information about the latest drugs being researched to treat the patient's cancer. That drug research is being conducted through the clinical trials process. We developed this directory to guide cancer patients and their family members to some of the locations that conduct cancer clinical trials or list cancer trials that are being conducted. It is important to read the the front of this directory. The FDA neither endorses nor recommends the contacts listed in this cancer clinical trial directory. The information listed on the web sites in this directory varies widely. For example, some web sites have detailed information about cancer clinical trials and others have very limited information. If you have additional questions about the information on the web site, you may want to call the site.
