[ ICF Exciting Canoe/Kayak Slalom Racing Canoe slalom is one of the six technical disciplines of the International Canoe Federation. The actual history of slalom on Whitewater started on September 11th, 1932 in Switzerland, where the inventor of this discipline proclaimed "Slalom is a Whitewater test." The idea came from skiing, where terms like "Winter, snow and ski slalom" modified into "Summer, water and Canoe slalom".
In spite of that the origins of slalom were on Flatwater. But very soon it switched to Whitewater, to rapids of natural rivers and streams. Exactly that, what Slalom paddlers still love today. [The past and future] Unfortunately World War Two began only six years after the first slalom competition in Switzerland and due to this fact the development of slalom was set back compared to Flatwater Racing, especially from an Olympic point of view. This unequal situation lasted for many years, but today it is possible to say, that both Olympic disciplines of the ICF are treated equally.

SHOOTING
About

Olympic history abounds with tales of athletes who overcame crippling adversity to win gold medals, but Karoly Takacs' comeback may be the best. Takacs was part of Hungary's world-champion pistol-shooting team in 1938 when an army grenade exploded in his right hand. Ten years later, he won the first two golds in rapid-fire pistol - after teaching himself to shoot left-handed. In a sport where the bullseye looks about the size of the full stop at the end of this sentence, a sport where shooters compete amid a cacophony of noise and still concentrate on firing between heartbeats, Takacs' achievement tests the imagination. From just three shooting events at the 1896 Olympic Games to 17 today, the sport has grown steadily. In part this leap can be ascribed to advances in the technology of firearms and equipment, which have led to constant changes in the shooting competition. But it can also be ascribed to the passion shooters have for their sport.

About the Sport It is very fitting that canoe/kayak racing exists today in the northwest, as this is where the original canoes and kayaks were made. The northwest native American indians buillt the first canoes (non-dug-out type) while their Alaskan counterparts built kayaks. The first racing club was founded in England in 1866, and held its first regattta the following year. The boats were modeled on the northwest Native American and Inuit boats from what is now Alaska. In the US, the first club was the New York Canoe Club founded in 1871. Flatwater Sprint Paddling in canoe and kayak is an Olympic sport. In 1924, the sport debuted in the Olympic games in Paris as an exhibition put on by the Washington Canoe Club (founded in 1904 on the Potomac) and five teams from other countries. Canoe/Kayak became a medal event in the 1936 Games in Berlin. Canoe/Kayak racing has been part of the Olympics ever since with events in men's and women's kayak and men's canoe. About the Sprint Team Our program offers a lot of fun, hard work and pay-offs. Year-round membership on the team is a big commitment, but in return it offers physical and mental training, skills and confidence building, socialization, coaching, competition and the opportunity for both team and personal success.

The cultural program opened with Deep Sea Dreaming. There were hundreds of children dressed as fish and sea creatures to celebrate the Great Barrier Reef . Then Djakapurra Munyarryn and the Aborigine people celebrated their culture. Then we were given a lively history of Australia. Altogether 12,600 performers took part in 8 different segments. The final part before the parade of athletes was a band of 2,000 teenagers from around the world. 118 teams paraded behind their country's flags in alphabetical order led by Greece. North and South Korea paraded behind one flag for the first time.
