Renaissance in Cape Verde

Such artists are recouping the music traces lost with time and re-tracing the way back to the roots. Consequently, a new musical movement appears in the islands to take on from where Nha Nacia Gomi left off to expand in the greatness of badiu culture. As they reach that deep to bring knowledge from the roots of Santiago Island, sprout with them the whole Badiu culture, the language, the philosophy and ethics of the first communities of freed slaves in Cape Verde. Droughts, poverty, emigration, social injustices and sarcasm reappears as the main themes of musical lyrics. Many Cape Verdeans, especially those entrenched in the cultural status quo have realized the changing trends coming from the distant African past in Cabo Verde and see it as degrading effects on the idealistic aspects of the Cape Verdean music more connoted with Europe. They still tend to believe Morna is the queen of the Cape Verdean Music. Some even say Batuke and Funana is not true Cape Verdean music. Curiously, they represent an old generation and usually incapable of deciphering currents events concerning the young minds.

CV Black Music/Culture on the Rise
Whites on the Defensive
By Herminio Furtado
cvmusicworld.com Chief Editor
Saturday, December 14, 2002
Both Araujo and Wahnon believe that Cape Verdeans are neither Africans nor European; yet they strongly defend that the Cape Verdean culture is more White than Black. However, the fact is, both of these authors grew up in affluent homes as children of Portuguese colonialists in the island of Brava and know little of the African side in Cape Verde, which is predominantly accentuated in the larger middle and lower social classes in the Santiago Island. As direct descendants of the colonialists, they are ready to defend the plight and horror their ancestors instilled on the Cape Verdeans throughout the dark centuries of slavery and colonialism. These authors fear the trends indicating that Cape Verdeans will eventually identify more and more with the African continent through music, dance and language (CVs are more and more in favor of creole than Portuguese) and less and less with Europe. This is so because geographically the islands are indisputably African. Although Araujo underestimates geography in culture. However, where we live strongly impacts what we eat, how we dress, the music we listen to, how we dance, and especially how we think and act. These are all pillar characteristics of CV culture that resemble Africans everywhere.

At the cross-road of the three continents that border the Atlantic, there is an obligatory stop in the middle of the ocean, the Archipelago of Cabo Verde. Located 450 km off the coast of Senegal, it is composed of 10 islands and 8 islets. Of volcanic origin and positioned between parallels 15 and 17 of the North latitude, Cape Verde is made up of two distinctly different types of islands. Its six inhabited islands, located more to the West, are characterised by their mountainous landscapes, whereas the remaining three are distinguished by their long sandy beaches. The islands are divided into two groups named according to the trade windsthat reach them from the African Continent: windward and leeward.
The first group consists of the islands of Santo Antão S.Vicente , Santa Luzia (disabitata), S.Nicolau Sal Boavista , and the second, more to theSouth, comprises the islands of Maio Santiago Fogo and Brava . The sun spreads its warmth the whole year round, soothed by the fresh seabreeze. The climate is tropical and dry.The average temperature is approximately 25°C and changes do not exceed10°C.

In Internet CaboNet RDP afrol News, 17 June - Cape Verde continues to be noted for its "cultural invasion" of the European continent. This week, two Cape Verdean theatre groups have presented new plays, both written by Cape Verdean authors, on Dutch and Portuguese stages. The first newcomer to present himself this week was Mario Lucio, the writer and musician working for the theatre group "Simentera," in Portugal's second city, Oporto. His play, which also is his first appearance as a dramatic author, ("Adão e as Sete Pretas de Fuligem") was written specifically for the cultural events that are taking place in this Portuguese city, as it celebrates its year as a European Cultural Capital. The play was to be seen throughout the week, its last performance being today. It has been directed by João Branco, the artistic director of the Portuguese Cultural Centre, who originally had taken the initiative to unite Cape Verdean actors and technicians living in Oporto.

The Cape Verde Islands, a small West African country, composed of ten volcanic islands and five islets off the coast of Senegal. Introduction For more than 400 years, Portugal claimed the rocky, arid islands of Cape Verde. This long history of colonial rule permanently affected Cape Verdean culture, making the small country seem distinct from other African nations - "more European." But such a view ignores the shared ancestries and political struggles that link the islands to the mainland. Cape Verde is home to a population descended from free people and West African slaves as well as a diverse mix of peoples: Fula, Wolof, Papeis, Balanta, Bijago, Jalofa, Fulupe, Mandingo, Manjaco, Portuguese, Moroccan, Sephardic Jewish, Genoese, Lebanese, Chinese, Dutch, French, English, American, and Brazilian. The children of these settlers and passers-by forged a hybrid culture and language known as Crioulo (Portuguese for Creole), drawing upon the legacies brought to the islands by slavery and colonialism.
    Portuguese Colonization and Slave Trade
The expansion of the slave trade across the Atlantic Ocean in the sixteenth century soon brought business and settlement to Cape Verde. Portugal made the islands its headquarters for its holdings on the Upper Guinea Coast, and by the sixteenth century was also using the region as a penal colony for convicts and political exiles. The islands were originally governed by the companhia system, a sort of feudal system in which individuals or the church oversaw small plantations where slaves, brought from mainland West Africa, cultivated cotton, sugar cane, and food crops. Early Cape Verdean society enjoyed considerable autonomy from the Portuguese monarchy, making it an attractive base to generations of traders and smugglers.

The history of Cape Verde is dominated by three overriding facts: there were no people of any sort on the islands when the Portuguese first arrived; the environment has become increasingly fragile over the centuries, largely due to the impact of people and overgrazing; and it's farther from the African mainland and closer to the Americas than any other African country. It's hardly surprising, therefore, that Cape Verde developed along lines somewhat different from the rest of Africa. When Portuguese mariners first landed in Cape Verde in 1456, the islands were barren of people but not of vegetation. Seeing the islands today, you find it hard to imagine that they were once sufficiently verde The islands' prosperity brought them unwanted attention in the form of a sacking at the hands of England's Sir Francis Drake in 1586. Cape Verde remained in Portuguese hands and continued to prosper, but in 1747 the islands were hit with the first of the many droughts that have plagued them ever since. The situation was made worse by deforestation and overgrazing, which destroyed the ground vegetation that provided moisture. Three major droughts in the 18th and 19th centuries resulted in well over 100,000 people starving to death. The Portuguese government sent almost no relief during any of the droughts. The 19th century decline of the lucrative slave trade was another blow. Cape Verde's heyday was over. It was then, in 1832, that Charles Darwin passed by, finding dry and barren islands. It was also around this time that Cape Verdeans started emigrating to New England. This was a popular destination because of the whales that abounded in the waters around Cape Verde, and as early as 1810 whaling ships from Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the US recruited crews from the islands of Brava and Fogo.
