Malaysia and Indonesia among the D-8 Group: Islamic ministers meet ahead of Bangladesh summit
The Straits Times, 27 February 1999
DHAKA, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Ministers and key foreign ministry officials of eight Islamic developing countries met in Dhaka on Saturday to finalise the agenda and draft declaration of a two-day summit of leaders beginning on Monday, officials said. They said the meeting was evaluating the progress of economic and technical cooperation as recommended in the first summit of the countries, known as D-8 group, in the Turkish capital Istanbul in 1997. The D-8 comprises Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, Malaysia, Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey and Nigeria. The officials said Nigeria may be absent at the Dhaka meeting because of its national elections. And not all other heads of government will be in Dhaka for the summit. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia, President Suleyman Demirel of Turkey and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan plan to attend, the foreign ministry said. Other countries would be represented by senior government officials.

A Christmas Season Story: Notes From The Margins
Capital Punishment
The crowd in John 8 wanted to apply the death penalty. The woman was guilty of a crime which deserved death under to the law. They came to Jesus to see if he would uphold the law in this matter. He said "let the one of you without sin cast the first stone". They all went away. It seems very clear to me that this story illustrates the incompatibility of the death penalty and following Jesus. If he had supported the death penalty under the law, he would have just stood aside and let them get on with it. The way the Bible presents the incident, it was an open and shut case.
When we kill or diminish a fellow human being, we both diminish ourselves and insult God.
Under what law? Jesus had been convicted in a Jewish court (sanhedrin) of blasphemy. He had been convicted by the governor of the province of sedition. You may argue (as I would) that both of these convictions were unsound, and possibly would have been overturned on appeal, but from the information in the Gospels it seems that both the Sanhedrin and the Roman governor exercised their lawful authority in sentencing Jesus to death.
When I get back to my office tomorrow I will suggest some sources where you can find an analysis of both the true nature of Judaism in the time of Jesus, and the easily documented Christian distortion of Judaism in the past 2000 years.

The price of executions EARLIER THIS MONTH a blue-ribbon commission assembled by Illinois governor George Ryan presented a scathing review of that state's capital punishment process: innocent people are being condemned (13 of them at present count have been exonerated); defense lawyers are failing their clients; prosecutors are behaving unscrupulously; race is a huge factor; and more than half of the cases are reversed on appeal. If all that wasn't enough, the panel also pointed out another problem – one that's garnered little media attention anywhere in the country. Some commissioners, concerned about the massive financial costs of imposing each death sentence, "questioned whether the dedication of so many resources to a relatively small number of cases was prudent."

By Charles Elmore Sept. 8, 1999 O n Monday, the Florida Supreme Court postponed the execution of Thomas Provenzano, set for Sept. 14, so it could consider his attorneys' claim that the state's use of the electric chair is unconstitutional. Gov. Jeb Bush, brother of GOP presidential frontrunner George W., defends the chair, calling it "appropriate" punishment. I have to disagree. This past July I watched the last Florida execution, with two dozen other witnesses, through a glass window, as if viewing some bizarre promotional stunt in a radio studio. I saw 344-pound Allen Lee "Tiny" Davis scream in horror through his leather mask, and writhe against his straps. I watched blood pour down the front of his white button-down shirt, a spectacle no one present could quite explain. Leave for another day the debate over capital punishment itself, or whether Davis deserved mercy for the brutal murder of a pregnant Jacksonville woman and her two young daughters. What remains stunningly incomprehensible to me is why, on the eve of the new millennium, Florida would want to remain one of four states that still use the electric chair when lethal injection is available.
