1998 Bumbershoot Picks: Performing Arts
BY SEATTLE WEEKLY STAFF Bumbershoot, with its heady combination of fragrant food stands, impromptu drum circles, and tribes of various rock groupies, may not seem an exceptionally hospitable climate for such "elite" fare as live theater. In fact, the greatest difference you'll notice with theater audiences at the Labor Day festival is that having paid their fee at the gate, they feel under no obligation to sit through a show that doesn't keep their attention firmly fixed on the stage. (Which makes the annual offering of Intiman Theater all the more courageous; it's actually got the firm conviction that a drama about Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution, Chay Yew's Red , can hold people in their seats over the competing interests of soap-box derbies and Jethro Tull.) Mostly what you'll find at Bumbershoot are monologists, circus acts, physical movement troupes, and other folks used to dealing with unruly crowds. That being said, there's some fine work going on during the three-day extravaganza. Eric Bogosian The biggest out-of-town theater headliner is the New York monologist with attitude, who two Bumbershoots ago treated Seattle to a high-energy rant that was equal parts comedy and vitriol. At 45, Bogosian is getting a little old for the "angry young man" status that made him his name, but as his recent forays into playwrighting have shown (both

I find this to be creatively fulfilling, challenging, and rewarding work, and very much enjoy my job. Therefore, my perspective on the martial/performance issue is that of a working professional fight director with an extensive background in the martial arts (both sportive and combat-oriented), with a sincere interest in the work of HACA and similar organizations. As such, I am in regular contact with representatives of the martial arts, stage combat, historical fencing and role-playing communities. I have encountered a series of four basic points of contention that arise when specialists in any of these activities attempt to draw comparisons between their own field and the others. These include:

LEGACY ORAL HISTORY PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT
Dr. Humphrey stated that "LEGACY's oral history materials, the largest comprehensive dance oral history project in the country outside of New York City, will remain an integral part of the Performing Arts Library's collections for research and general public use." As a program of the Performing Arts Library, LEGACY's mission to record, preserve and promote access to Bay Area dance community members' oral histories will be expanded to serve all Bay Area performing arts disciplines.
LEGACY Founder and Program Director Jeff Friedman comments that "becoming a program of the Performing Arts Library provides the stable administrative infrastructure to support LEGACY's continued service and growth. Linking the Performing Arts Library and LEGACY makes sense as LEGACY's mission and program fits the Library's overall vision for collecting, preserving and making available the performing arts heritage of the Bay Area."
In response to the severe losses in the dance community due to the AIDS epidemic, LEGACY was founded by Jeff Friedman in 1988 as part of an AIDS advocacy committee of the now-defunct Dance Bay Area service organization. In the thirteen years since, it has been recognized for providing a valued service to the Bay Area dance community, and is highly regarded in the dance and preservation communities, both locally and nationally.

Bluegrass Association: The purpose of the Bluegrass Association is to increase campus appreciation of folk, bluegrass, and acoustic music, to promote weekly community gatherings centered on acoustic music in the American rural tradition, and to provide a forum for casual groups of acoustic musicians and its supporters to come together. This organization also aims to contract at least one mainline act each semester to perform on campus for the entertainment of the Middlebury community as a whole. Bobolinks This crazy co-ed crew of savvy rock stars pleases audiences on and off campus with their repertoire of everything from Level 42 to U2, and they do it a’cappella. Capoeira: The Middlebury College Capoeira Club is dedicated to bringing the Brazilian Martial Art/ Dance form of Capoeira to the Middlebury Community. Loosely affiliated with Contra-Mestre Jo and Group Capoeira Brazil from NYC, the MCCC helps promote the art form by bringing Capoeira performers to Middlebury, teaching classes, and having performances of their own.

The griot teaches through the performing arts. African Culture University focuses on the study of the cultures, languages, and traditions of the African continent. Classes and workshops are offered in African Drum, African Dance Capoeira These classes reveal the beauty and depth of the cultures of Africa to your students. This "university without walls" travels to you. Mustafa has visited many schools and college campuses throughout the country with his resident artist program entitled He is capable of traveling to your institution for a one day program, a one week program, or a period of two weeks. Over the past several years this program has become nationally recognized as an effective and inspiring learning experience that students will always remember.
