Non-Invasive Testing
The non-invasive cardiac laboratory includes tools to diagnose a variety of cardiac disorders. Studies can provide doctors with information about heart valves, heart muscle and the coronary arteries as well as possible congenital heart abnormalities. The following is a list of non-invasive procedures available:
  • Echocardiography:
  • Transthoracic 2D echocardiograms
  • Transesophageal echocardiograms
  • Exercise testing:
  • Treadmill exercise testing
  • Pharmacologic (adenosine/ dobutamine/ persantine) nuclear perfusion scans
  • Exercise nuclear perfusion scans (technicium)
  • Exercise echocardiograms
  • Dobutamine echocardiograms
  • Vascular laboratory:
  • Venous, arterial and carotid studies
  • Other cardiac nuclear studies: Nuclear ventriculograms (MUGA), Nuclear viability studies (thallium)
Cardiac Catheterization: Cardiac catheterization involves the use of radiological equipment to diagnose heart disease. Interventional tools such as balloons and stents are fed through a catheter into the coronary arteries to reduce stenosis and improve blood flow.

The Heart Station
The Heart Station, on the 2nd floor of St.Louis Children's Hospital is responsible for all inpatient and outpatient non-invasive cardiac testing. These tests are used to diagnose and treat children with congenital and acquired heart disease. The heart station also provides staff and equipment for all the cardiology testing required during satellite clinic visits.
Heart Station Procedures
(The following example procdures are not intended to be an inclusive list of all procedures available.)
Echocardiography
  • Transthoracic Echocardiography High frequency sound waves are used to create a 2 dimensional picture of the heart. The test is performed with a device, called a transducer, placed on the chest. The transducer sends out, and collects the high frequency sound waves. The information is stored in a bedside machine that records the images and displays them on a TV monitor. Transesophageal Echocardiography This test is the same as the transthoracic echocardiogram, but instead of being placed on the chest, the transducer is placed in the esophagus (food pipe). This provides clear images of the heart when adequate images are unable to be seen from the front of the chest in the usual manner. This test is always performed with the patient sedated.

COMPASSION ... EXPERIENCE ... EXCELLENCE
Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and southern Nevada unfortunately, leads the country in this regrettable statistic, with an alarming one in four suffering from heart disease. As Nevada's need for cardiac care has increased, the Cardiac Center of Excellence at Valley Hospital Medical Center has emerged as a leader in the fight against this disease. With a top interdisciplinary team of experts supported by specially trained cardiovascular nurses and technicians, we have the resources to effectively treat heart disease at any stage. Our sole purpose is to help our patients achieve optimal cardiac health. Today's specialists have many tools to treat heart disease. New drugs can stop a heart attack, or prevent a second, fatal attack. Another device can keep an artery from closing. And a test can detect a heart attack in one-tenth the time it used to take. But it takes knowing which course of action is best. Specialists at Valley Hospital face these decisions every day. That's why the Cardiac Center of Excellence at Valley Hospital is one of Las Vegas' most advanced centers for cardiac care. EXCELLENCE IN DIAGNOSTICS

Exceptional cardiac and cardiothoracic care, as well as treatment of advanced heart failure, is provided by UW physicians at Harborview and UW Medical Center Under the umbrella of the University of Washington Regional Heart Center , the Cardiology Clinic at Harborview provides echocardiography laboratory and management services for adult patients with cardiovascular diseases. Harborview also has the ability to perform diagnostic heart catheterizations and acute interventions. Adult patients whose primary diagnosis is mild to moderate cardiac dysfunction and have an expected length of stay less than 72 hours are admitted to Harborview's Acute Cardiac Evaluation Unit. Also known in the community is Seattle's Medic One that was developed by Harborview's chief of cardiology in the 1960s with the Seattle Fire Department. This was one the first programs of its kind in the world and is the program most often emulated by other communities. The program trains paramedics for the Seattle Fire Department and for King County, as well as for other services in the state. The following cardiology physicians practice at Harborview:

If you experience heart trouble, Allen‚s cardiac team, including six cardiologists, is ready to help determine the right course of treatment for you. The cardiologists are able to make a diagnosis using many procedures and treatments. They may look inside your heart using catheterization and coronary angiograms. Another beneficial procedure is coronary angioplasty, the dilating of a narrowed or blocked area of the coronary artery by using a specialized balloon placed and inflated at the point of blockage. This procedure compresses the plaque material that is blocking the artery into the blood vessel wall, which allows improved blood flow to the area of the heart where the circulation has been poor or non-existent. Atherectomy and coronary artery stents are also available. Atherectomy utilizes a cutting device to remove plaque from the inside of an artery. A stent may be used as a permanent device to hold an artery wall open.

Procedure Offers Cure for Irregular Heart Beat A revolutionary catheter technique used in the treatment of the most prevalent type of irregular heartbeat is changing the lives of patients who have undergone the procedure at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City.
Ablation therapy using radiofrequency energy has successfully cured patients with atrial fibrillation, the most common type of heart rhythm abnormality. "It has enabled people who would have previously been placed on heart drugs for life to be completely off medical therapy after the procedure," said Jonathan Steinberg, MD, an electrophysiologist and Chief of Cardiology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt. "Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is particularly prevalent among the elderly or those with cardiovascular disease. However, it can also be a troubling problem for younger patients without heart disease."
John McFee, a 36-year-old pharmacist and former New York City police lieutenant, had symptoms that felt like squirrels running around his chest, which started as palpitations about three years ago and gradually got worse, giving him a lot of pain and anxiety. "I was told to stay off alcohol and caffeine, tried to reduce stress and was put on a beta-blocker, but nothing helped," he said. He left the NYPD after suffering hip injury and had to have hip replacement. After the ablation procedure by Dr. Steinberg in April he has been totally off his heart medications and is feeling well. "I feel like a new man!" exclaimed Mr. McFee.

It can happen anywhere, at any time. Every minute counts. Tragically, each day in America, several hundred cardiac arrest victims die before they reach the hospital.
