Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure
We offer transcatheter closure of PFO's. PFO's are a small communications between the upper chambers of the heart. This is a natural communication in unborn children and typically closes in the first few weeks of life. Persistent PFO's have been implicated in causing strokes or Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA's) by allowing blood clots to pass from the right to the left atrium, which can then travel to the brain. In the past, closing of these holes required an open-heart surgery. We now use the CardioSeal Septal Occluder to close PFO's without surgery. This device has recently been approved by the FDA to close PFO's. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia with transesophageal or intracardiac ultrasound guidance. The procedure typically takes less than two hours and the patient is discharged home the same day. To learn more about this device, visit the CardioSeal web site.

News for the Heart
Trinity's highly successful heart program serves as a regional referral center for open heart surgery, angioplasty, and cardiac rehabilitation. Established in 1990, the open heart surgery team continues to provide the people of northwestern North Dakota with access to bypass surgery and other advanced cardiac procedures such as angioplasty. An experienced heart surgeon leads an active and experienced team in the operating room. In fact, the team recently completed its 700th heart procedure at Trinity, a milestone in cardiac care in Minot! In addition to surgery, a complete range of noninvasive (non-surgical) cardiovascular diagnostic procedures are also available. Aftercare in our cardiac rehabilitation center helps individuals with cardiovascular disease improve the quality of their lives through evaluation, monitored exercise, and education. Medical experience, new levels of excellence, a proven track record - all of these positive elements come together in Trinity's Heart Program to provide the people of our region with cardiac care equal to that found in larger metropolitan areas - but it's all conveniently located right in our region! CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE The Section of Cardiovascular Medicine offers a complete array of specialists and subspecialists dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Each member is committed to clinical cardiologic care. Growth in the field has promoted further subspecialization resulting in the following concentrations: congestive heart failure and cardiac transplantation, electrophysiology and cardiac arrhythmias, clinical cardiology, interventional cardiology, non-invasive cardiology and preventive cardiology. Medical and surgical treatment of congestive heart failure , including cardiac transplantation, is provided by experts in these fields who deal with the newest pharmacologic and surgical treatment for heart failure. The program also provides an outpatient service for screening individuals considered as candidates for heart or heart/lung transplantation. A program in Clinical Cardiology is available for patients seeking a primary evaluation or second opinion concerning diagnosis and/or treatment of cardiovascular disease. Patients requiring inpatient management are admitted to special units in Yale-New Haven Hospital.

The heart is a complex, highly specialized muscle that contracts approximately 70 times each minute to pump blood to the head, arms, chest, abdomen, and legs. This pumping action requires oxygen, which is carried in the blood by specialized red blood cells. Three blood vessels, called the coronary arteries , supply the heart with blood and oxygen. Over time, plaques made of cholesterol and other substances can develop in these arteries and partially block the flow of blood. Occasionally, the surface of one of these plaques can burst or rupture. When this happens, a blood clot may form on top of the plaque, further blocking blood flow in the artery. If a blood clot becomes large enough, it can completely block the flow of blood through the coronary artery. This makes the heart muscle

Videos About Us Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Overview
Congestive heart failure, or heart failure, is a term used to describe any condition in which the heart is unable to adequately pump blood throughout the body and/or unable to prevent blood from "backing up" into the lungs. These conditions cause symptoms such as shortness of breath (dyspnea), fatigue, weakness, and swelling (edema) of the legs and sometimes the abdomen. Normal Blood Flow of the Heart The heart has a right side and a left side. Each side has a chamber that receives blood returning to the heart (atrium) and a muscular chamber that is responsible for pumping blood out of the heart (ventricle). Atria are relatively thin-walled chambers, whereas the ventricles are much more muscular. Blood passes from the atria into the ventricles through two processes. During the "resting phase," when the ventricles are not contracting, the tricuspid and mitral valves open. Some of the blood that has accumulated in the atria passively flows through the tricuspid and mitral valves into the right and left ventricles, respectively. The atria then contract, actively pumping blood out and into the ventricles. Once the ventricles fill with blood, they contract, pumping blood out of the ventricles and to the lungs and body.
