Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling The Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling offers students two professional training options at the graduate level. Students may participate in either the Community Counseling Program which prepares counselors for work in human service agencies, or in the School Counseling Program, which prepares elementary and secondary school guidance counselors. While there is an overlap in these programs, they are viewed as distinctly different options. The primary purpose of the UTC counseling program is to provide quality training for individuals desiring to become human service agency or school counselors. This training includes classroom didactic and experiential activities, small group seminars, and supervised field experiences. These training components are designed to provide each student with a meaningful professional and personal growth opportunity. Program Requirements
The student's program of study is planned in consultation with the faculty in the program. All programs are competency based, and any course with a grade below B must be repeated.

Requirements for Being a Guidance Counselor
I am a sophomore pursuing a psychology degree. When asked I never really knew what type of people I wanted to counsel. Then recently it hit me. I want to be a school counselor! My question to you is do you have to teach classes to become a counselor, and is a psychology degree acceptable in this field?
You must major in school counseling, not psychology to be a school counselor. You must have a masters degree in school counseling. You also must pass a test depending on what state you live in. Do you have to teach classes to be a counselor? If you mean, do you also have to be certified as a teacher, that depends on what state you live in. Some schools will have you counsel and teach, others will not. Write back and let me know where you live. Take Care. Lisa Taylor-Austin
Becoming a Counselor 2
I recently graduated from Colgate University with a bachelors degree in both Psychology and Spanish. I am now looking into graduate schools and am extremely interested in being a guidance counselor. I am having a difficult time researching schools or for that matter even finding out exactly what Master's Degree is needed to be a guidance counselor! Please help if you can with any suggestions or any information.

By providing a curriculum that prepares cadets for the rigorous demands of college courses, Howe Military develops a base for cadets to perform successfully at the college level of academics. A career development tool used by the guidance office is the Discover Program, which is a self-guided computer program of career analysis. This program asks questions of the cadet and analyzes those answers to provide career suggestions on a World of Work Map. This usually provides a narrower view of career possibilities to each individual or more specific information about careers that they have already decided on or have been thinking about. The module also provides specific college information.
The college testing preparation begins during the sophomore year. For the last several years, we have been testing all sophomores and juniors with the PSAT test. In the spring of junior year and the fall of the senior year all or most of the cadets will take the SAT test, which is given on campus. We assist any students wishing to take the ACT with materials, assistance in filling out forms, and at times transportation to get to the testing sites for that test. The computer in guidance has an SAT, ACT, and PSAT test prep program installed and accessible to all students. We also have written copies of the test prep materials that they may use and get assistance with from the guidance staff. The

Guidance Counselors Cover Story: With little guidance, students drift through and out of school

For many CPS students, guidance counselors are the invisible man, or more likely, the invisible woman. In theory, school counselors would know their students well enough to help them weather academic and personal crises, and guide them to make wise decisions about the future. But in reality, they are often overworked, in short supply and steered away from direct contact with students.
Golden rules for counseling success

Guidance for counseling
Three innovative and resourceful schools are successfully tackling the dilemma of providing students with quality guidance on college and career choices. Dozens of local programs run by non-profit groups encourage low-income, mostly minority students to finish high school
