Recent Research on . . .
Guidance, Counseling and Therapy for the Gifted
A survey of recent research studies on guidance and counseling issues, techniques, and practices reveals that 82 publications (35 studies) have been released in the past 7 years. The issues touched upon in these studies (in order of prevalence) include therapeutic interventions or alternative counseling strategies (21), interventions for gifted girls (10), diversity issues (9), career identity/career counseling (8), family relationships, therapy (7), adolescent issues (7), disability, motivation issues (5), mIddle childhood issues (3), young child issues (2), musical giftedness (2), early college admittants (2), and scientists (1). Conclusions 1. Although there does not seem to be evidence that the gifted are more prone to suicide, underachievement, dropping out, or delinquency, there seems to be proportionally higher incidences of perfectionism, stress and burnout. The affective issues of the gifted cannot be ignored by school counselors and teachers just because they don't show up in larger than expected numbers as problematic for chemical dependency, alcoholism, promiscuity, or truancy. Counseling for this group should be focused on prevention, a proactive role.

The Guidance Program
Overview
The Glenbrook North guidance program is designed to help students learn about themselves, identify their interests, investigate the world of work and take direct action to build lifelong competencies while in high school. High school students are faced with numerous and diverse choices in post-secondary planning. In any decision-making process, gathering information is the key step. To achieve these objectives, students and parents are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities and programs throughout their four years of high school. In the freshman year, counselors meet with students to develop a comprehensive four-year course plan for each student. In addition, counselors meet with students to review available guidance services. Sophomore year focuses on career options. In the junior year, counselors meet with students and parents in group guidance sessions during which an overview of post-secondary educational planning is presented. During the senior year, students examine options, submit college applications and make post-graduation decisions. Throughout the four years of high school, students are encouraged to meet individually with their counselor. Our college coordinator is available as a resource person, as is our transition counselor.

Exploring Occupations Lawyer, teacher, doctor, nurse. How many occupations can you name? What the heck does an occupational therapist do any way? How about a mycologist or a pharmacologist or an otolaryngologist? Good career decisions require good information—about your personal traits and preferences and about the world of work Career counsellors can get you started by helping you to identify and articulate your skills, aptitudes, values, personality traits and interests as they relate to career choice. Personal contacts are extremely valuable, often providing “up-close and personal” views of occupations. Mentoring and job shadowing programs can help you develop professional networks. Don’t forget to speak with teachers, professors, friends and relatives! We’ve provided information on almost two hundred occupational options. Thousands more exist! Be creative. Remember—good research can lead to more satisfying career decisions!

Our Services
The mission of the Office of career Services (OCS) is to offer comprehensive career and placement services to students and alumni of the Law School. Our professional staff provides one-on-one counseling, programming, and placement services to prospective students, students throughout their three years at the law school, and to alumni throughout their careers. The individual counseling provided ranges from initial issues of education about the legal profession to guidance during the career self-assessment process, to issues of job changing throughout your career. OCS actively participates in programming for prospective students throughout the year. First-year students can expect extensive programming on career options, a comprehensive orientation from the OCS staff, and an opportunity for individual counseling - all in the first quarter of law school. Second- and third-year students often maintain an active relationship with a career services counselor throughout their three years of law school to discuss interviewing, networking, clerkships, and the on-going process of self assessment and career planning and development. We work closely with the Law School alumni relations office to continue to provide career counseling and networking assistance for alumni in the ever-changing legal marketplace.
