Advertising

Ever want to improve the way ads run on TV? Or the radio, the 'net or on billboards? How about helping manage the rollout of new products and working to improve the perception of those products by the media? If these possibilities interest you, then you could be well suited to a career in advertising or public relations (PR). The core activity is to take a product whether it be Snapple or Caterpillar heavy machinery and construct promotional campaigns that get people excited about the product. On the PR side you will help to manage the perception of the products. Of course, PR is about much more as well. PR firms help companies, non-profits and governments manage everything from speeches and the look of brochures to major crises. Sometimes it's hard to tell where PR and advertising are different. These days, in fact, many organizations in the business refer to themselves as "strategic marketing communications consultants." Overstretched or not, there's no doubt that this field will continue to change, offering tremendous opportunities to someone with an interest in the area.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The objective of any firm is to market and sell its products or services profitably. In small firms, the owner or chief executive officer might assume all advertising, promotions, marketing, sales, and public relations responsibilities. In large firms, which may offer numerous products and services nationally or even worldwide, an executive vice president directs overall advertising, promotions, marketing, sales, and public relations policies. (Executive vice presidents are included in the Handbook statement on top executives .) Advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers coordinate the market research, marketing strategy, sales, advertising, promotion, pricing, product development, and public relations activities.

Network Into Marketing, Advertising, and Public Relations Careers
Besides taking classes in marketing, advertising, or public relations, what have you done to prepare yourself for a successful transition from student to professional? According to Ginny Shipe, director of professional development and member services for the American Marketing Association (AMA), it’s best to start early on career plans, but you can take steps as a junior or senior to become a professional before you collect your diploma. Network and learn How can you become a professional when you devote most of your time to classes? One step that can take you far is joining relevant professional societies. Many professional organizations have student chapters that offer career-oriented activities and give you opportunities to meet experienced professionals. The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and student chapters of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and the AMA are three examples of groups you can join at any time during your education. Most offer internship and mentoring programs and competitions that help you learn about the field and build your portfolio while you’re still in school. Richard George, director of public relations, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), emphasizes that internships are “almost mandatory” to get entry-level jobs because there are so many qualified college graduates who want PR jobs. PRSSA sponsors scholarship and internship programs and a case study competition each year.

This survey was completed in June 2001 and refers to courses available in 2000/2001. The information was obtained from course directors and their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. The survey reflects the information they provided. It is intended to be a representative sample of the range of courses available, rather than offering comprehensive coverage of all courses in this field. Two versions of this survey exist with the paper version providing a summary of the more comprehensive version available here on the web.
Scope of Survey
The purpose of the survey is to give information on postgraduate courses in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations. This survey is not totally comprehensive as not all courses contacted replied. The majority of the courses represented are in marketing, some have an international focus, some are part of an MBA specialist stream and some give exemptions from the CIM qualification. While there are only a small number of courses in Public Relations or Advertising, most will give exemptions from relevant professional qualifications. The vast majority of the courses are full-time, although many do offer a part-time option and indeed one course in Public Relations will offer an on-line option which will replace the distance learning option. Courses offered solely part-time for those already in marketing jobs have been excluded from this survey.
