In small firms, the owner or chief executive officer might assume all advertising, promotions, marketing, sales, and public relations responsibilities. In large firms, which may offer numerous products and services nationally or even worldwide, an executive vice president directs overall advertising, promotions, marketing, sales, and public relations policies. (Executive vice presidents are included in the Handbook statement on top executives .) Advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers coordinate the market research, marketing strategy, sales, advertising, promotion, pricing, product development, and public relations activities.

Managers oversee advertising and promotion staffs, which usually are small, except in the largest firms. In a small firm, managers may serve as a liaison between the firm and the advertising or promotion agency to which many advertising or promotional functions are contracted out. In larger firms, advertising managers oversee in-house account, creative, and media services departments. The account executive manages the account services department, assesses the need for advertising and, in advertising agencies, maintains the accounts of clients. The creative services department develops the subject matter and presentation of advertising. The creative director oversees the copy chief, art director, and their respective staffs. The media director oversees planning groups that select the communication media—for example, radio, television, newspapers, magazines, Internet, or outdoor signs—to disseminate the advertising.

Vocational Course Survey in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations
    Introduction
Scope of Survey Selection Criteria Funding ... Further Information Introduction This survey was completed in June 2001 and refers to courses available in 2000/2001. The information was obtained from course directors and their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. The survey reflects the information they provided. It is intended to be a representative sample of the range of courses available, rather than offering comprehensive coverage of all courses in this field. Two versions of this survey exist with the paper version providing a summary of the more comprehensive version available here on the web.
Scope of Survey The purpose of the survey is to give information on postgraduate courses in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations. This survey is not totally comprehensive as not all courses contacted replied. The majority of the courses represented are in marketing, some have an international focus, some are part of an MBA specialist stream and some give exemptions from the CIM qualification. While there are only a small number of courses in Public Relations or Advertising, most will give exemptions from relevant professional qualifications. The vast majority of the courses are full-time, although many do offer a part-time option and indeed one course in Public Relations will offer an on-line option which will replace the distance learning option. Courses offered solely part-time for those already in marketing jobs have been excluded from this survey.
