Recommended studies: One or more of Agriculture, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Society and Culture, any two units of mathematics, two units of science and any two units of English. Major studies: Agribusiness and marketing, agricultural education, agriculture, agronomy, animal production, farm management and property planning, irrigation, regional/community development, rural environmental management, soil conservation and land management, total catchment management. Industrial experience: Eight weeks in first semester of second year. Honours: Available as an additional year to meritorious students. Career opportunities: Examples include agricultural consultant or adviser, agricultural education and secondary teaching (with a further teaching qualification), land care or total catchment management facilitator, park ranger, agronomist, livestock officer, agricultural marketing and sales, export trade, rural enterprise managers (farms or agribusiness), rural organisation executive, commodity trading, rural development officer, project management in overseas aid projects, rural financial counselling. Additional information: The professional development of individual students is an important feature of this program. Many learning activities are project-based and there is regular contact with industry throughout the course. One third of the course is composed of electives which may be chosen from across all colleges enabling you to direct your studies to a broad range of careers. This degree plus a further teaching qualification, available at UWS Penrith campus, is appropriate for a teaching career. With appropriate selection of subjects students may choose to major in Agribusiness or Rural Development. Credit towards the degree will be given for prior industrial experience in similar or related fields.

I. Statement of Purpose Our mission is "to develop and promote the knowledge to enhance the production and use of plants for environmentally sound landscapes". To achieve this we integrate research, undergraduate, graduate and extension education in the following areas. II. Goals/Objectives An overriding objective is to develop technology for information management that will provide access and opportunity for input for participants in the program and all of the publics with which they interact. Explore design concepts and approaches to establishment and maintenance of landscape plantings that are appropriate for their physical location and human requirements. While our program is focused on domestic landscapes in the mid-western U.S., we situate our scholarship in the context of global ecology and promote a wider awareness through international studies. Within this framework we are investigating the potential of native plants and plant communities for low-input landscapes. Develop economically viable production systems for herbaceous perennials and woody plants to overcome biological limitations of species and improve environmental quality.

In addition to course content, the areas of leadership and personal developmetn will be implemented through the FFA oganization in every course of this department. each course has an entrepreneurial experience and research component by the means of a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program for each student. Each student keeps records on their SAE and works outside of school time to conduct the program. Agriculture Courses are all taught by Mr. Larison. Curriculum Description
- The curriculum training provides a broad overview of the landscape profession with special emphasis on design, installation, and construction. Students develop skills with equipment, scientific instruments, and hand tools used in the design, construction, and installation of plants and landscape features such as patios, decks, walks, stairs, walls, fencing, lighting, and drainage.
Degree Received - Associate in Applied Science (AAS)
Facilities for Instruction - The landscape development program is fortunate to have a unique outdoor training area at the Ornamental Horticulture Complex. Because of our emphasis on hands-on training, we have a large extensive outdoor training site. The site contains a residential home on a 30,000 square foot lot, a construction demonstration and work area for building all kinds of landscape hardscape features, a five-acre arboretum/lawn area with over 1,200 trees and shrubs, annual gardens and patio area, plus turf varietal plots, a one-acre nursery with adjoining lath house, greenhouse, and plant holding area, and a 2,400 square foot laboratory with a tool and equipment inventory of more than $250,000. The entire campus is also used for design and plant installation projects. In addition to our outdoor classroom, we have a modern drafting/drawing laboratory plus lecture and study rooms.
Typical Class Day - Landscape students spend 18-24 hours per week in class. Up to 70 percent of that is spent at the Horticulture Center Complex and the remainder is spent on the Alfred campus. Bus service is provided to the Horticulture Center. Most laboratory classes have fewer than 24 students, and the very intensive hands-on labs will have fewer than 14 students. Most of our courses have a laboratory experience where students practice and learn through hands-on situations. Most of these labs are two hours in length with some lasting three-four hours. Each student is assigned a faculty adviser to assist him/her in answering any questions as well as scheduling courses and locating summer and permanent jobs.

Correspondence and Additional Information The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture offers the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Master of Agriculture (M.Agr.), a nonthesis degree. Areas of concentration include plant physiology, plant genetics and breeding, cell physiology and molecular biology, environmental and production horticulture, and horticultural marketing. The goal of the graduate program in horticulture at Purdue is to prepare students for professional careers in basic or applied plant science emphasizing food or ornamental crops.

Horticulture Fact Sheet WHAT IS HORTICULTURE? Horticulture is the combination of art and science in the production, marketing, use, and improvement of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. It is a large and diverse industry of commercial enterprises providing a wide variety of products and services. Horticulture affects everyone by providing a large portion of our daily diet and an endless source of beauty and enrichment in our homes and communities and in our leisure activities. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Horticulture graduates enter a wide array of satisfying and rewarding careers in wholesale and retail businesses and in public and private service fields. Graduates in crop production become grower specialists and managers of greenhouses, plant nurseries, orchards, vegetable farms, and seed companies. They may provide services in agricultural consulting, including integrated pest management, environmental quality, and international development; plant pest and quality regulations; or marketing, including plant and produce brokering, horticultural supplies, and retail florist or garden center operations. One of the fastest growing fields of agriculture is landscape contracting. There is a high demand for graduates in landscape management, design, and contracting by garden centers, landscape nurseries, golf courses, interior plantscaping firms, arboreta and botanical gardens, and municipalities. Many of these graduates begin their careers as entrepreneurs.
