Women in Aviation International to Honor 100 Most Influential Women
Cincinnati, Ohio March 10, 2003 — More than 1,800 members of Women in Aviation International (WAI) will convene March 20-22 at the Cincinnati Convention Center to pay tribute to 100 women who have forged opportunities within aviation and aerospace. Honoring these women during the Centennial of Flight and Women’s History Month is a fitting tribute. Not only do many of the honorees continue to work for diversity within the industry, they were influential in many of the conference attendees’ careers. And several of those attendees will be awarded scholarships during the WAI closing banquet on March 22. “We want to make sure that the world knows more women than Amelia Earhart have made a difference in aviation and aerospace,” WAI President, Dr. Peggy Chabrian, said. “Our members have elected 100 women from all aspects of the aviation and aerospace industry to honor at this year’s Centennial of Flight celebration,” she said. Of those being honored on March 22, many are still active and influential in their fields. Nominees include Colonel Eileen Collins, Space Shuttle Commander; June Maule, aircraft manufacturing CEO; Jane Garvey, former FAA Administrator and current Washington consultant; and Martha King, co-owner of one of the largest providers of video training to aviators worldwide.

    29. The Spartan Executive: Aviation And Aerospace Industry News
aviation industry that the airlines are sending their people out to the high schoolsand middle schools to create an interest in exploring aviation careers.
    http://www.spartan.edu/Executive/Jul97/issue2a.htm
INDUSTRY DEMAND FOR SPARTAN GRADS CRITICAL!! A shortage of trained mechanics, technicians and pilots has overtaken the industries where Spartan graduates are employed. What was predicted in 1993 reports published by the FAA regarding aviation technicians has finally arrivedthere aren't enough mechanics and technicians to meet the demand in aviation and related industries. According to the Spartan Placement Office, while there is a strong demand for all graduates, the demand for technicians and mechanics has become critical. Between January 1, 1997 and April 30, 1997, requests for Spartan graduates far outstripped the numbers of graduating students. In avionics, instruments and communications, there were 23 companies that had 228 identified job openings. Ten other companies listed their needs as "many." Thirty-three companies called Spartan saying "I need graduates now." The ratio of employer demand to Spartan electronics grads was 38 to 1 during this period. For the aviation maintenance technician graduates, Spartan received messages from 58 companies identifying their needs. Thirteen of the companies said the needed "many technicians and mechanics." Forty-five companies identified 509 positions. Many of these companies are saying "I needed these people yesterday." The ratio of employer demand to Spartan Aviation Maintenance grads was 22 to 1 during this period. The same trend holds true for the nondestructive testing and quality control fields. Thirty-seven companies contacted us about 97 positions while six other companies identified their needs as "many." From January through April, the ratio of employer demand to Spartan QC and NDT grads was 16 to 1. Many companies have told us to keep their job orders "open," meaning that we should send graduates on an ongoing basis.

NDT STUDENT ASPIRES TO aerospace By Karri Peterson, Senior Editor. QUOTESON PILOT HIRING AS PUBLISHED IN FLYING careers IN FEBRUARY 1998
    http://www.spartan.edu/Executive/May98/page8g.htm
    NDT STUDENT ASPIRES TO AEROSPACE
By Karri Peterson, Senior Editor Eva Reed is perhaps one of the most driven and tenacious students attending Spartan at the time of this writing. She and I snatched some time together before her class went to a local foundry to observe steel pouring as part of a manufacturing process. At age 40, Eva is a grandmother, who has worked in the communications in NASA and also in the medical field. She got interested in Nondestructive Testing (NDT) after working in the medical field. "(NDT) is broader than I thought," she says. While the majority of her class are younger students, Eva says that the "NDT program is intense. Older students can do very well in it (because of the work ethic and experience they bring with them to the classroom)." Eva enjoys her NDT instructors and their "excellent experience stories which complement reading and learning material . . . The instructors have REAL (emphasis added) hands-on experience. They make learning fun." She sees herself either working for NASA as an NDT tech at the Johnson Space Center some day and/or working toward discovering more about why aircraft have accidents. With an Associate of Applied Science Degree under her belt at graduation, she expects a good shot at advancement. "The degree helps you climb the ladder." Eva has already talked to QSI (Quality Surveillance Inc.), T.H. Hill, and Grand Oil in Houston to get her new career started.
