Engineers
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Overall job opportunities in engineering are expected to be good, but to vary by specialty.
  • A bachelor's degree is required for most entry-level jobs.
  • Starting salaries are significantly higher than those of college graduates in other fields.
  • Continuing education is critical to keep abreast of the latest technology.
  • Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Engineers consider many factors when developing a new product. For example, in developing an industrial robot, engineers determine precisely what function the robot needs to perform; design and test the robot's components; fit the components together in an integrated plan; and evaluate the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. This process applies to many different products, such as chemicals, computers, gas turbines, helicopters, and toys. In addition to design and development, many engineers work in testing, production, or maintenance. These engineers supervise production in factories, determine the causes of breakdowns, and test manufactured products to maintain quality. They also estimate the time and cost to complete projects. Some move into engineering management or into sales. In sales, an engineering background enables them to discuss technical aspects and assist in product planning, installation, and use. Engineering and Natural Sciences Managers
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
    Significant Points
    • Most engineering and natural sciences managers have previous experience as engineers, scientists, or mathematicians. Employers prefer managers with advanced technical knowledge and strong communication and administrative skills.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Engineering and natural sciences managers plan, coordinate, and direct research, design, and production activities. They may supervise engineers, scientists, and technicians, along with support personnel. These managers use advanced technical knowledge of engineering and science to oversee a variety of activities. They determine scientific and technical goals within broad outlines provided by top executives , who are discussed elsewhere in the Handbook In addition, these managers use communication skills extensively. They spend a great deal of time coordinating the activities of their unit with those of other units or organizations. They confer with higher levels of management; with financial, production, marketing, and other managers; and with contractors and equipment and materials suppliers.

    Careers in
    Mathematics
by Margaret Menzin and Robert Goldman Mathematics is among the most fascinating of all intellectual disciplines, the purest of all art forms, and the most challenging of games. The study of mathematics is not only exciting, but important: mathematicians have an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to society by helping to solve problems in such diverse fields as medicine, management, economics. government, computer science, physics, psychology, engineering, and social science. In this pamphlet we try to give you a flavor of some of the areas of mathematics in which there are many opportunities. At the end we provide a brief "road map" of mathematics. A bachelor's degree in mathematics will prepare you for fascinating jobs in statistics, actuarial sciences, mathematical modeling, and cryptography; for teaching; as well as for graduate school leading to a research career in mathematics or statistics. A strong background in mathematics is also necessary for research in many areas of computer science, social science, and engineering. As you read this pamphlet, look for several themes:

Objective of the major in Information Systems Management (ISM)
The objective of the major in ISM is to produce graduates who meet the needs of industry because they have the fundamental business, technical and communication skills required for career success. This success is measured by the first job obtained, on-going job performance, the salary earned and career advancement. Three specific skills will enable a graduate to become successful in an Information Systems (IS) career. These are:
  • Computer related technical skills. Business and economics knowledge that provides an understanding of the problems that information systems are needed to address. Communication skills to deal with users and sell ideas, approaches and solutions to business problems.
  • Possible ISM Career Opportunities
There are a number of ways that one can pursue an ISM career. This could mean working for a specific company in either its information systems organization or functioning in an information systems capacity within a user department. It could also be workng for a consulting organization or functioning as a sales representative or technical support person for a computer vendor. The

Setting a new standard for international collaboration in graduate research and education, the alliance educates young engineers to serve as leaders in a technologically advanced economy; creates a cohort of students and faculty with creativity and entrepreneurial spirit; and develops a nucleus of students and faculty in global collaborative education and research. The Singapore-MIT Alliance is a bold new model for creating graduate education programs in areas of strategic importance to academia, research institutes, and industry. The five programs that SMA offers are Advanced Materials for Micro- and Nano-Systems, High Performance Computation for Engineered Systems, Innovation in Manufacturing Systems and Technology, Molecular Engineering of Biological and Chemical Systems, and Computer Science, for which SMA faculty fellows from NUS, NTU, and MIT prepare graduate-level subjects for delivery through state-of-the-art distance education technology. All SMA students meet with MIT faculty during an intensive two-week immersion program at MIT at the beginning of the academic year. Ph.D. students spend one additional semester to attend graduate courses and conduct research. M.Eng. students spend additional time through their research affiliations. SMA students also attend an annual symposium in Singapore which enables students and faculty to interact with industry representatives.

Almost everyone will be affected by applications of information and technologies derived from the HGP era of the late 20 th century. Entirely new approaches will be implemented in biological research and the practice of medicine and agriculture. Genetic data will provide the foundation for research in many biological subdisciplines, leading to an unprecedented understanding of the inner workings of whole biological systems. The benefits of genomic research are, or soon will be, realized in such areas as forensics and identification science, ecology and environmental science, toxic-waste cleanup, creation of new bioenergy sources and more efficient industrial processes, as well as in understanding the mysteries of evolution, anthropology, and human migration.

The workshop will begin at 5pm
    Moderator
Peter Wolff, Professor Emeritus, MIT Physics Department
Dr. Peter Wolff, MIT Professor of Physics, Emeritus, began his career at Bell Labs in its golden years. He came to MIT in 1970 as Division Head for Condensed Matter and Atomic Physics, and later directed MIT's Research Lab of Electronics and National Magnet Lab. In 1989 he retired to join the NEC Research Institute in Princeton. He returned to MIT in 1994 to help the Physics Department interface with industry. He is also a member of the American Physical Society Task Force on Careers and Professional Development. His research interests include semiconductors, magnetism, and nonlinear optics.
    Panelists
Edmund Crouch, Senior Scientist, Cambridge Environmental Inc., Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and Associate of the Department of Physics at Harvard University.
Edmund Crouch has published widely in the areas of environmental quality, risk assessment, and presentation and analysis of uncertainties. He has co-authored a major text in risk assessment, Risk/Benefit Analysis. Dr. Crouch serves as an expert advisor to various local and national agencies concerned with public health and the environment. He has written computer programs for the sophisticated analysis of results from carcinogenesis bioassays; has developed algorithms (on the levels of both theory and computer implementation) for the objective quantification of waste site contamination; and has designed Monte Carlo simulations for purposes of fully characterizing uncertainties and variabilities inherent in health risk assessment. Dr. Crouch is widely regarded as an insightful peer-reviewer; he has detected and corrected numerous, critical, otherwise hidden flaws in the technical underpinnings of proposed regulations for environmental protection and related areas.
