    Introduction
Programs in forestry and natural resources intend to prepare people to manage, protect, conserve, and use natural and renewable resources. People in forestry and natural resources study resources such as forests, air, water, soil, fish, and wildlife. Programs focus on applying the natural and social sciences to the management of forests and other natural resources. This area of study covers a variety of instructional programs including forest engineering, forest management, forest science, and resource recreation management. Specialty options within each of these programs are also available. For information on fisheries and wildlife study, see the Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences program. Forestry programs prepare people to manage and use natural resources on forest lands. Instruction in these programs includes biology, disease and pest control, ecology, resource protection, mapping, statistics, harvesting and production technology, management, economics, public relations, forest policy and regulations, and development of improved tree varieties. Most community colleges have one- or two-year programs that can be transferred to four-year colleges and universities offering programs in forestry and natural resources. Many four-year colleges and universities offer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs in these areas. Five-year programs in forestry are also available.

The first three of these programs are accredited by the Society of American Foresters, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, and the National Recreation and Parks Association, respectively. There is no accrediting organization for Wildlife and Fisheries Management. The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences is divided into six divisions of study

The College is also the site of the state's Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. The College's faculty and staff are located in three major buildings on the Evansdale Campus, on four farms owned by the College of Agriculture and Forestry in the Morgantown area, and on the nearby University Forest. West Virginia University (WVU) combines many of the advantages of a large institution with those of a small one. It is both a comprehensive university offering 176 degree programs from the bachelor's through the doctoral level. WVU is one of only 24 state universities in the nation that serve as both the comprehensive and land-grant institutions in their state. Since its founding in 1867, WVU has developed into the center of graduate and professional education, research, and extension programs in West Virginia.

WHAT IS THE NRWT PROGRAM? You can be a part of state, national, and private sector efforts to conserve and manage dwindling resources like wildlife, fisheries, forests, soils and water. You can make a significant difference by choosing a career that involves managing natural resources. Garrett College's Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology Program provides education and state-of-the-art technical training in many natural resources management fields. The NRWT Program emphasizes experience in practical settings in the field as well as in the classroom. This makes our graduates especially attractive to employers. The NRWT Program is also unique because several of the specialized NRWT courses offered are taught by professors who are also natural resources managers employed by State Natural Resources Agencies (see adjunct professor biographies hyperlinks below). This provides students excellent training opportunities that are based on actual practices in the "real world". Students can also develop personal contacts with professionals in the field. This is invaluable for developing your career! In addition, professors within the program have secured several grants and can provide students with training and summer employment opportunities in a wide variety of fields such as wetland restoration and monitoring, capture, and banding of migratory birds. These grants are funded by a variety of private and government entities, including the state of Maryland's Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland Environmental Trust Fund, the US Department of Energy, and the US Office of Surface Mining. The program also works closely with the Nature Conservancy, a highly successful and respected nonprofit environmental organization. Join our program and get on the job training using the latest technology and earn college credit in the Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology Program.

Wildlife Science: Educational and Career Outlook What is Wildlife Science? What are the Educational Requirements? Careers and Salary Outlook Related Areas of Study WHAT IS WILDLIFE SCIENCE? Wildlife Science encompasses a number of fields of study, including Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology and Wildlife Rehabilitation. Wildlife scientists do everything imaginable with regard to wild animals in the wild and in captivity, including running parks, reserves and zoos, rehabilitating wildlife and/or their habitats, studying the behavior and life cycle patterns of endangered species, and protecting human life or property, to name only a few. Professionals must possess a knowledge of animals and their habitat, the technical skills be able to protect, conserve and solve environmental problems, and understand the complex natural ecosystems and human influences. The work of wildlife scientists is important from both social and economic perspectives, as maintaining healthy wildlife populations to allow for recreational activities such as hunting and fishing, as well as public enjoyment in parks, wilderness areas, and zoos. The work is also directly related to upholding and enforcing environmental laws such as the Endangered Species Act, which relies on scientists and professionals to consider all things when determining, proposing and implementing actions and policies which will protect threatened wildlife.

West Virginia University Programs in Forest Resources Forests are the dominant feature of West Virginia's landscape. They are the habitat for wildlife, and from their depths arise the mountain streams and rivers that are the home to fishes. West Virginia University has had educational and research programs focusing on the resources of the forest since the 1890s. The present Division of Forestry was established in 1935. Its degree programs include Forest Resources Management , Wildlife and Fisheries Resources, Wood Industries , and Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management . WVU's Division of Forestry is one of the leading programs of its kind in the United States. Research by faculty and graduate students is an important component of the mission of the Division of Forestry. Wildlife habitat research, forest harvesting methods, recreational uses and patterns, wood utilization, stream and fisheries habitat, forest pest management, and forest ecology are some of the areas being actively researched at West Virginia University's Division of Forestry.
Forest Resources Management deals with the management of the forest to produce goods and services obtained from the land and trees. This course of study prepares students for careers with forest industries, government agencies, and other organizations concerned with the value of forest ecosystems. The program is accredited by the Society of American Foresters. For additional information, please contact
