It usually comes out at the moment when the other person is feeling frustrated or injured in some way. That often means there is a problem that we either failed to foresee or failed to address.

Careers in Health Physics
The Profession
For decades, ionizing radiation has been beneficial to humans, from treating cancer to generating electrical power. But when used in large quantity or in an unsafe way, ionizing radiation can harm living organisms. Care must be taken with nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons, high-energy particle accelerators, x-ray machines, and radionuclides used in biomedical research and therapy. This special attention helps minimize the potential for unnecessary irradiation of individuals or environmental contamination. Many industries, medical facilities, defense plants, and research laboratories demand professionals who understand radiation hazards and their prevention and control. Prominent among scientists is the health physicist, who controls the beneficial use of ionizing radiation while protecting workers and the public from potential hazards. The health physics profession is diverse and one of the most interesting and rewarding fields of scientific endeavor.

Faculty group aids students with med-school plans
By Briana Collins '03 As fall finals come to an end, many seniors face their last semester at Cornell and also that inevitable, yet dreaded, question: "What do you plan to do after you graduate?" Senior Jessica Zellhoefer, left, meets with Professor Emeritus Bernard Stanton, right, chair of the Health Careers Evaluation Committee (HCEC) and a committee interviewer, while Judy Jensvold, senior associate director for health careers with Cornell Career Services, looks on. Charles Harrington/University Photography Some avoid the question like the slope on an icy day. But students who have applied to medical schools already have a foothold on the future. At a time when many seniors are just beginning their job search or are considering graduate school applications, a majority of medical school applicants from Cornell have begun accepting offers from schools across the nation. These students are at least a year ahead of the game, largely because of their involvement in a service provided by Cornell Career Services called the Health Careers Evaluation Committee (HCEC). Part of the Health Careers Program, HCEC enlists faculty members to volunteer their time to interview students applying to medical schools to get a comprehensive overview of their experiences and abilities. HCEC then sends the overview to medical schools in an evaluation letter. This evaluation is strongly recommended by most medical schools.

Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health
The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) developed an institutional career development award for "Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Career Development Programs." These Programs support research career development of junior faculty members, known as Interdisciplinary Women's Health Research (IWHR) Scholars, who have recently completed clinical training or postdoctoral fellowships, and who are commencing basic, translational, clinical and/or health services research relevant to women's health. The goal of this initiative is to promote the performance of research and transfer of findings that will benefit the health of women. The Programs will accomplish these goals by bridging advanced training with research independence, as well as bridging scientific disciplines or areas of interest. This will increase the number and skills of investigators at awardee institutions through a mentored research experience leading to an independent scientific career addressing women's health concerns. This Request for Applications (RFA) uses the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Program Award (K12) mechanism.
