Information on the studentship places allocated by EPSRC is available on the Studentship zone of the EPSRC website. Prospective studentships should not apply directly to EPSRC but should address enquiries to the university department in which they wish to train. Departments must submit nominations by no later than 31 July 2002.

Mathematicians have joined forces with pest control experts in an attempt to devise new strategies to tackle the problem of slugs. The researchers hope that by analysing how the population of slugs in a field fluctuates over a period of time, it may be possible to identify particular patterns. This information could then be used to determine the most efficient way to apply preparations of naturally occurring parasitic worms that can kill the slugs.
Traditionally, using chemical-based pellets has controlled slugs. However the poison can persist in the environment and can cause long-term harm to natural predators of slugs.

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) works with patients under the direction of a licensed physical therapist and implements therapeutic programs which could include the application of physical agents (such as heat, cold, water, electricity) as well as massage, exercise, and functional activities. The PTA also observes the patients during treatment and reports progress to the physical therapist. Physical therapy patients are those who have not developed or have lost the ability to carry out everyday life skills due to disability, accident, injury, or illness. The goal of physical therapy is to assist patients in learning and improving life skills such as walking and moving about with braces, artificial limbs, and other assistive devices. Licensure/practice
A graduate of the program is allowed to practice as a PTA in Hawaii and is eligible to take the examination for a license in states that require a PTA to be licensed.

NON-ACADEMIC CAREERS IN PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY
The purpose of this brochure is to inform physical anthropology graduate students of career opportunities in non-academic settings. In a concern with the future professional careers of students completing their graduate educations in physical anthropology (particularly at the doctoral level), the American Association of Physical Anthropologists has established a standing committee devoted to career development. This brochure is one of the Committee's educational efforts to inform the student constituency of the Association as to the nature and diversity of professional careers in addition to those in anthropology departments in colleges and universities. There are many academic careers for appropriately trained physical anthropologists. In addition to the most traditional, that of faculty member of an anthropology department, they involve academic affiliations with community colleges and a number of different non-anthropology academic units within four year colleges and universities. These include medical schools; indeed, currently one in eight American physical anthropologists has some formal professional affiliation with a medical school, most frequently in departments of anatomy. Departments of genetics, zoology, and biological sciences are also logical academic units in which one might find physical anthropologists.
