http://www.mulberry.towerhamlets.sch.uk/learning/careers.htm
Careers education and guidance (CEG) is very important to the overall progress of every girl at Mulberry. It takes place in your daughter's tutor group from Year 7 onwards. Pupils will also receive advice from the Careers teacher and are entitled to use the Careers Room at lunchtime. In Year 11 your daughter will have an individual interview or group session to discuss her future after the age of 16. Year 11 students also spend two weeks in the work place on a work experience placement. This is invaluable and rewarding as it introduces girls to a commercial environment and helps them develop qualities such as self-confidence and self-reliance. Two Careers Officers from the borough's Futures Careers and Guidance Agency have a base at the school. You and/or your daughter can arrange to see them at a time convenient to you. Mulberry School has links with a large number of organisations through the local Education Business Partnership. They all provide activities that encourage the development of work-related skills and motivate students to gain further qualifications. The school also enjoys a special relationship with Bank of America. Its employees are involved in a wide range of activities at Mulberry and visits to the Bank's offices by students are commonplace. A business mentoring programme is in place for Years 10 and 11 together with extra reading support in the lower school.

Summary

, provides an overview of the findings from the first phase of a research project that was carried out by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) between December 1998 and September 1999. The study, which was conducted in 30 selected schools across England, was commissioned by the DfEE in order to gain a clearer understanding of the impact that careers education and guidance might have upon the overall effectiveness of schools.
Key Findings
In examining the factors that led to the distinctive role played by careers education and guidance in each school, four driving forces became apparent. These included careers education and guidance as:
An agent of change, leading to a re-focusing or re-structuring of significant elements of the school curriculum or organisational strategy;
A means of enhancing student self-esteem or motivation;
A means of promoting lifelong learning and of reducing pre- or post-16 or 18 switching or drop-out;
A means of creating curriculum relevance.

Easy-to-produce careers pages for school networks and intranets
Careers Management, a large careers service company in south-east England, is working with schools in Surrey and West Sussex to develop a blueprint careers intranet called the 'Careers Zone'. This will provide careers teachers with a set of HTML pages which can be customised to meet their own needs and loaded onto any LAN or school intranet. "Our careers intranet project uses the cookie-cutter principle," explained Chris Flanagan, project manager. "We provide teachers with a copy of the basic Careers Zone on disk. We give them half a day's training on how to edit and adapt the pages to meet their school's needs. So, although the pages looked the same initially, in a very short while they start to look different. As soon as the next day, teachers can ask their IT managers to load the Careers Zone on the school intranet." The idea behind the project is to give the careers department a presence on the school's network, intranet or web site. As well as raising the profile of careers work, the careers intranet improves students' access to help and information. They benefit from being able to find answers to their questions straight away.
