Guidance Notes for the upcoming school year: The Guidance staff will grow by 1 ½ counselors next school year to accommodate the growing number of students at SBHS. All juniors will keep their current counselor to aid in the college application and career planning process. To the extent possible, we will try to keep students assigned to their current counselor. The final alphabet assignment will be available later in the summer. Schedules: The Guidance department will soon be mailing home student schedule requests for the 2001-02 school year. If there is a question, concern or change with your student's course request, please call the guidance office as soon as possible, (703) 779-8911. Actual schedules will be available during orientation on August 20th. Classes begin August 27th. GENERAL GUIDANCE INFORMATION Every Monday (except for holidays), two Guidance Counselors will be available until 7:30 p.m. for parents who wish to see a counselor outside of normal school hours. Careers in Marine Science Advice to Students and Parents From the Scientists of Mote Marine Laboratory Science is the systematic discovery of knowledge about the natural world, and marine science is the general term for research conducted in oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. Marine scientists work in a surprising variety of disciplines. Examples include planetology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, geology, physical oceanography, paleontology, and biology. Marine science also includes archaeology , anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Scientists in such disciplines may be highly specialized. Geologists, for example, may concentrate on coastal processes, dynamics of the continental shelf or slope, or structure of the ocean floor. Chemists may work entirely at the interface of the sea and atmosphere, in the zone affected by ocean waves, at the maximum depth of light penetration, or in the environments created by deep sea thermal vents.
