During this time it is most important to develop and "fine tune" some basic skills that will serve you for the rest of your life. Develop an appetite for READING : Throughout your life, much of the information you learn will be through the written word. Books, magazines, newspapers.. they don't need to be about *science* but they should be something with *content* (not just the funny pages). Regardless of whether you have a bookcase filled with books, or just a few old paperbacks, get to know your local public library . It's free, it's full of books on all topics imaginable, and chances are there's one

You are here: Home Students Sixth Form Introduction Careers in the scientific and technological areas frequently require specific academic subjects. Other careers are usually more concerned with the quality of results (rather than specific subjects) and the character of the applicant. The value of A levels and GCSE is that they are widely accepted as appropriate qualifications for entry into many careers: the student can delay the choice of career yet still have a wide range of opportunities. For guidance on courses for certain careers, click here to access the PDF. Please note that in the information provided, minimum qualifications only are given. In practice, high grade results, extra qualifications and particular personal qualities are often sought, especially by the professions. These are samples of only some of the many kinds of employment which CCHS students have entered. For a general guideline on choosing A Level subjects with a view to Higher Education and careers

Careers in the Mathematical Sciences: The Role of the School Counselor. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC "The more things change, the more they remain the same." This old cliche seems to have much relevance today as it concerns individuals selecting one of the mathematical sciences, including engineering and computer science, as a career choice. Although there has been an increase in career options in the mathematical sciences due to the recent advances in technology and its applications, the number of individuals selecting a career in this field has changed very little.
ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
School counselors also can help increase family collaboration by working closely with parents to increase family-school communication, and by providing parents with the skills and attitudes necessary to encourage their children to make appropriate career choices. Parents' beliefs about mathematics influence children's beliefs. For example, parents with mathematics-related anxiety who are working with their children on mathematics homework will directly impact the comfort level of their children toward mathematics, and thus toward a career in the mathematical sciences.

founder, College and Career Readiness Network The problem High school guidance counselors are in short supply, and those on the job struggle to serve an overwhelming number of students while keeping up with a host of administrative tasks. As a result, many CPS students do not get enough guidance to succeed in high school and move on to college or the workforce.
Since 1997, high schools have been required to offer an advisory class that pairs a teacher with a group of students for four years. The class is intended to help students bond with someone on school staff who could help them realize their goals, but research indicates it has yet to fulfill its mission on a large scale.

Filling the gap

More promising is the growing number of nonprofits offering tutoring, mentoring and college readiness services to students who need it. Ten years ago, a group of Cabrini-Green volunteers formed the Tutor/Mentor Connection, which today recruits volunteer tutors for over 500 youth programs.

High School Health Careers Program (HSHCP)
The High School Health Careers Program (HSHCP) offers Sophomore and Junior year High School students a unique opportunity to learn about a multifaceted academic health center located in the Heart of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
MISSION
To increase the number of under-represented students in the health professions.
OBJECTIVES
  • To expose under-represented high school students, aspiring to pursue a health career, to the health professions, biomedical careers, and biotechnology. To offer program participants an opportunity to live in a college dormitory and network with peers. To give program participants individualized counseling relative to identifying career-goals and to assist in developing strategies to achieve those goals. To initiate, motivate, nurture and maintain under-represented students into the biomedical careers and health professions "pipeline" at an early stage of their academic development.
RATIONALE
For over twenty years, the High School Health Careers Program (HSHCP) has been providing academic preparation and health careers exploration for under-represented students from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In order for under-represented students to enter any health career, they must finish high school. This program motivates students to finish high school and gives them solid information on health careers as an incentive to complete their high school education.

Careers in Marine Science
Advice to Students and Parents From the Scientists of Mote Marine Laboratory Science is the systematic discovery of knowledge about the natural world, and marine science is the general term for research conducted in oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. Marine scientists work in a surprising variety of disciplines. Examples include planetology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, geology, physical oceanography, paleontology, and biology. Marine science also includes archaeology , anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Scientists in such disciplines may be highly specialized. Geologists, for example, may concentrate on coastal processes, dynamics of the continental shelf or slope, or structure of the ocean floor. Chemists may work entirely at the interface of the sea and atmosphere, in the zone affected by ocean waves, at the maximum depth of light penetration, or in the environments created by deep sea thermal vents. Biologists may work mostly in tropical waters or polar seas, on plants, invertebrates, or vertebrates. Many marine scientists have multiple specialties or work as part of multi disciplinary teams. Marine scientists are employed by universities and colleges, international organizations, federal and state agencies, private companies, nonprofit laboratories and local governments, or they may be self-employed . Marine scientists draw professional salaries and may be rewarded richly for their work in intangible ways, but they almost never become wealthy by American standards. Salaries depend on each person's education, experience, and specific discipline. Location, the present supply of scientists, and other factors also affect individual salaries. Examples of marine sciences that presently pay above-average salaries are physical oceanography, marine technology and engineering, and computer modeling.
