I'm just about at the end of my fifth year at a fairly big secondary school in Cork and I'm looking at my options for careers and university. I'm pretty confident about getting good points in my Leaving, but I'm having trouble deciding what I want to do. I'm an all-rounder, with good enough grades across the board, but I don't really enjoy one subject that much more than any other. I'm not even sure whether I'd like to study here or in the UK – never mind what course to pick. My main problem is the school's careers guidance counsellor: he has a very unpleasant manner and his careers advice is from the 1950s, with engineering for boys and secretarial for girls. Yes, really! I've had some nice teachers but they're not really careers minded and I am really keen to talk to someone other than friends and family for a really impartial view. Where can I get extra advice – for free? Helen
Hopefully, I can give you some expert advice, Helen, so here are some suggestions:

The Director of Studies also organises an A Level/AS Level Choices Evening for all members of the Fifth Form and their parents. In addition, the Careers Department liaises closely with the Director of Studies and the Houseroom 2 Tutors to help all members of the Fifth Form choose realistic and manageable subjects at AS and A Level.
The Deputy Head of Careers organises a week of work experience for the Fifth Form after GCSE exams are completed.

Careers Advice
The British School believes its students should be offered structured opportunities to reflect and act on their professional aspirations. A Careers and University Guidance programme offers advice on university applications and career choices and includes a two-week Work Experience programme. Upon starting the IB programme, all students meet at regular intervals with the Careers and Guidance Counsellor. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss possible career paths and to encourage students to reflect on their possible interests beyond the IB. Meetings are held in groups or individually and students have access to relevant information and material on career choices. "Career Development is not enough if we are concerned with helping someone to define a life style. Young people must acquire self-knowledge, not only about themselves as they are, but also as they'd like to be or might be. Consequently, in the careers guidance meetings, we use exercises and activities that help achieve a wider objective of personal growth, focusing on decision-making and 'overall' life planning."

Guidance from the Get-Go: Mentoring New Teachers
Large numbers of beginning teachers never make it to their second year in the classroom, but a solid mentoring program a well-planned and well-supported program staffed by quality mentors can help stem the tide of teacher attrition. Mentoring can benefit student achievement too! Included: Programs in Baltimore and other locales that are having positive results!
Like Mentor, who watched over Telemachus while his father, Odysseus, went off to war, teacher mentors support novice instructors during their early years, when the learning curve is sharp. Mentoring, a growing practice in the nation's schools, offsets first-year teaching challenges that often result in new instructors' early departure from the profession. Baltimore County Public Schools has tackled new-teacher attrition with a unique, nationally recognized mentoring model that provides full-time mentors to novice instructors with five or fewer years of experience. The college training of new teachers does not always prepare them for the real-life classroom, leaving them lacking the "practical knowledge of teaching," Arlene Fleischmann, coordinator of BCPS's Teacher Mentor/Trainer Program , tells Education World.

It’s designed to help high school seniors learn more about the steel industry, and learn what they need to be eligible for employment at Middletown Works where starting salaries average $52,000 a year. The 10-week preparatory program, which includes 50 hours of classroom training, is open to all Butler and Warren county (OH) high-school students who will graduate in 2003. Those who are successful in the program (100% attendance and passing grade of 70% or above in each course) will be given the opportunity to proceed in the Middletown Works hourly employment process. This is a great opportunity as AK Steel usually requires two years of work experience, preferably in manufacturing. Although there is no guarantee of employment— in fact, all candidates must successfully complete a critical, multi-step evaluation process—satisfactory completion of this program will allow the student to move directly into the evaluation process. Seniors from other local area high schools who are interested may contact Mike Lehman at mike.lehman@aksteel.com
