Culture Territory People Environment Regions ... Economy Culture Culture in Brief Science and education Poland and the World Lifestyle Famous Poles Poland in photos CULTURE IN BRIEF The style and personality of Polish life have been shaped over
a thousand years. National culture was born of influences of the Latin and the Byzantine worlds, and from a dialogue between ethnic minorities in Poland. The Poles have always welcomed foreign artists and been eager to follow what was happening in other countries. In the 19th and 20th centuries Poles' concentration on cultural development often took the place of political and economic activity. These factors contributed to the versatile character of Polish art, with all its complex nuances.
Dialogue and the interpenetration of cultures have been major characteristics of Polish tradition for centuries. Customs, manners, clothes have reflected the influences of east and west. Traditional costumes worn by the gentry in the 16th and 17th centuries were inspired by rich eastern ornamental styles, including Islamic influences. Polish cuisine and social mores are another reflection of these various influences.
Polish towns reflect the whole spectrum of European styles. Poland's eastern frontiers marked the boundary of the influences of Western architecture on the continent. History has not been kind to Poland's architectural monuments. However, a number of ancient edifices have survived: castles, churches and palaces, sometimes unique in the regional or European context. Some of them have been laboriously restored (the Royal Castle in Cracow), or completely reconstructed having been totally ruined in the last war (the Old Town and Royal Castle in Warsaw, the Old Town in Gdansk and Wroclaw). Kazimierz on the Vistula is an example of

SUN DEVELOPS STATE-OF-THE-ART COMPUTERIZED SCORING SYSTEM FOR THE 1999 SPRINT INTERNATIONAL
Brings golf to the Net economy by giving spectators first time access to real-time tournament information
CASTLE ROCK, Colorado - August 17, 1999 Spectators who attend The Sprint International at Castle Pines Golf Club, Aug. 16-22, will be able to monitor play via a Sun Microsystems state-of-the-art computerized scoring system never before seen at a PGA TOUR event. As patrons walk the golf course, they will be able to access the Sun scoring kiosks to see up-to-the-minute scores of every player in the field, biographical information on all players, 3-D views of every hole and green via virtual reality fly-over shots, full motion video highlights, and detailed statistical data on every player. As the official scorer of the 1999 Sprint International, Sun will have 125 computerized scoring kiosks at key tournament locations. Spectators will be able to follow the tournament in real-time, with user-friendly features, at kiosks located in the International Village between the 9th and 18th fairways, the 15th and 16th greens, and at the 18th green. Scoring kiosks will also be available in the media center, clubhouse, locker room, and hospitality areas. "The Sprint International's modified Stableford scoring is unique to the PGA TOUR," said Tournament Executive Director Larry Thiel. "So the new computerized scoring system and software produced by Sun Microsystems is the perfect enhancement because it affords the spectators a one-of-a-kind system which keeps them current at all times during tournament play. There is nothing quite like it in golf."

How the American Urban Design Foundation Began Noticing other countries' efforts to commemorate the Millennium by building permanent structures, Rodney Cook, Jr., had the idea to create a Millennium Monument in the United States. Mr. Cook also saw this as an opportunity to further the cause of classical architecture and renew the prospects of the area around the monument site. Since Washington, D.C. was conceived as a city of monuments and had neighborhoods in need of renewal, Mr. Cook immediately thought of locating the Millennium Monument in or near Washington. Classical Architecture: Context for the Initial Proposal The Prince of Wales at the opening of his first American school in Asheville, North Carolina. Through the early 1990s, the Prince of Wales's Institute of Architecture was one of only a few institutions in the world with a curriculum focused on classical architecture. Upon the demise of the Institute, representatives of leading architecture schools met in spring 1998 to decide how to fill the void. This ad-hoc gathering was dubbed the Hastings Council since it met in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The Newington- Cropsey Museum provided the venue as a courtesy to Mr. Cook, who had designed the museum building.

Architecture
Rob Shearer's article on "Why Study Architecture" is referred to in this study. Part 1 Some Thoughts on Architecture
I've always been disinterested in American architecture. It seems we often sacrifice artistic freedom to functionality and cost. I never knew that there is a lot to learn and study in American architecture and that simply by virtue of being practical the architecture says something about us. Mulling that over, I've come to realize that some architecture is definitely art and some is definitely not, but that both types reflect on their culture and should be studied.
In college, I delved into art classes, thinking deeply about art and what it means to the spirit of manthat the humanities are a large part of what being human is all about. Charlotte Mason knew this. She celebrated the humanities. She celebrated the beautiful things manmade and in nature. Many architects are artists at heart and their work can be studied as we would study a famous artist such as Van Gogh.
Some cultures emphasize the beauty of architecture more than others. While you might ask yourself whether such laviousness is vain, it's impressive to see the possibilites that a building can take on.

Architecture and Urban Development
The architecture heritage, so ancient in terms of origin, so various in forms during the centuries, represents an important patrimony of Albanian people.
The beginning of the architecture are noted by the prehistoric dwelling houses (before 5 century BC), discovered in Dunavec (a water-side house) that belongs to the medium neolith, and in Maliq, that belongs to the late neolith. These houses were constructed upon a wood floor, rested on stakes driven vertically into the ground. The prehistoric dwelling houses are classified in three groups such as
1-Houses totally inserted in the ground (founded in Cakran);
2-Houses half-inserted in the ground (founded in Cakran);
3-Houses, on the ground, with one alcove.
The fortified centres seemed to have an architectonical unity, both in terms of land location and in the planimetry solutions. Changing its role from pre-urban shelters into real urban centres, these fortifications develop their architectonic shapes and solutions as well as the construction technique. These constructions represent the prologue of the antique fortifications.

Home PHOTOS The Lublin region is justly proud of being at the crossroads of European history while also being one of the most unspoilt areas of Poland. Traditional crafts, thatched houses, attractive unspoiled villages, ancient and historic monuments and a richly varied countryside provides the visitor with an intriguing insight into Poland's varied history as well as traditions. In the south of the Lublin region there are fertile Lublin uplands of the Roztocze area, cut by numerous ravines. In the north you can find the Masovia and Podlaskie lowlands covered by dense forests. Crisscrossing the region are numerous rivers of which the Vistula and Bug are the most notable. The Vistula Gorge between Kazimierz and Pulawy offers the visitor a wonderful opportunity to view the river at its scenic, whilst there are numerous other points of interest to be found, of which the section of the Bug close to the village of Serpelice should not be missed. The beautiful Poleski National Park to the north west of the region lies partly in the Leczna-Wlodawa Lake District. Several dozen lakes big and small have been preserved in their natural state offering both recreational opportunities and spectacular views. This area's varied scenary encompasses dense forests, widespread meadows and peat bogs with unusual preserved plants, a number of which can only be seen elsewhere in the nothern tundra of the Arctic Circle. The area is also an ornithologists' delight with a wide variety of birdlife.

Hard Rock Asia
A quick rundown on those Hard Rocks I've been lucky enough to visit in Asia.
HRH Bali, Indonesia
An amazing resort located at the popular Kuta Beach area in Bali, the "Hard Rock Beach Club" hotel is the ultimate Hard Rock experience. Live music in two locations day and night, cool architecture and decor, a massive pool complete with island "beach", poolside cabanas, water slides, and a sunken bar. Other nifty features... 3 restaurants (plus the HR Cafe next door), HR Merchandise Super Store, a deli, travel services desk, business center, music store, "Stones" Spa, Kings Club lounge, day-care center, CD Recording studio, Hard Rock Radio station, and a lot more... all managed by a top-notch staff that works hard to make every aspect of your stay the best it can be. A bunch of pictures and my complete review can be found on my Beach Club Page. Dave Hard Rock Excursion #48 (October 7, 2000).
HRC Bali, Indonesia
A very nice dual-level property located across the street from Bali's Kuta Beach, and right next door to the incredible Hard Rock Beach Club resort hotel. The lower level is a Hard Rock Live! venue with live music nightly. I was lucky enough to be here for the festivities of their 7th anniversary, which culminated in a great live show and a menu roll-back with the cheapest prices I've ever paid for food at a HRC! Unfortunately, they didn't yet have a pin to mark the occasion, which was a really stupid oversight. The bar here has a really cool giant guitar overhead, with the "hands of God" (modeled from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel) painted on the dome above, ready to start rockin'! Excellent service.

Nothing seems, however, to be consistent in the image: the swaying movement of the body, and the lush orange-coloured hair, contrast starkly with her flattened, shrivelling arms; the dry branches she wields in her hands look like some medieval weapons; her doll-like form rises from, or merges into, a rocky formation even as an elegant purse is slung across her body, resting against a firm thigh. Dali-like, the painter throws out suggestions in everyone of these frames: Taurus, Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio, and the like, all partaking of the same intriguing quality, cutting across time, fitting into a new space.
