It has worked for over 25 years at its legislation and regulations to make sure that the business that comes to its shores are not gained by criminal activities, including drug smuggling. The country is a respected member of the global financial community and plays a leadership role in the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) which is committed to ridding the region of drug trafficking and money laundering. In fact, Cayman was the first of the CFAT'F members to put its industry forward for inspection by its regional peers since it already had most of the regulations in place recommended by the Vienna Convention of 1988, regulations aimed at stopping the traffic of illicit drugs worldwide. B efore that, in 1986, Cayman signed a treaty with the United States and the United Kingdom the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty - that formalized the agreement that they would assist each other in the investigation, prosecution and suppression of criminal offences.

Norm's website Adventure Guide To The Cayman Islands Review by Norman Goldman Travel writer and photographer, Paris Permenter and John Bigley, with their guidebook, Adventure Guide To The Cayman Islands - 2nd Edition , have given travelers a new way to appreciate the magnificent Cayman Islands. The authors are well known travel writers who have published over twenty-seven books, and have updated numerous guidebooks for publishers such as Fodor's and Michelin. In addition, they have authored over 1500 newspaper and magazine articles. What is unique about this particular guidebook is that it places more emphasis on the adventure aspect, rather than the mundane listing of hotels, restaurants, and the other common guidebook material, although, there are ample references to the latter. When I queried the authors as to why they had taken this approach they indicated that "the adventure aspect is one aspect that each island shares: good opportunities for adventure, whether visitors define that as scuba diving, hiking, snorkelling, or bird watching."

Guide Rating and Review The Maritime Heritage of the Cayman Islands
by Roger C. Smith 2000. University of Florida Press, Gainesville. ISBN 0-8130-1773-4 (hardback, acid-free paper). 182 pages, plus 34 pages of appendices, notes, and references; and an index. This new book by Roger C. Smith, state underwater archaeologist for the Florida Division of Historical Resources, takes the reader on a trip both underwater and into the past of the Cayman Islands; and a rollicking, swash-buckling, pirate-filled, shipwreck-strewn adventure-on-the-high-seas past it was! The remaining chapters describe the early maritime history of the Caymans, from their discovery 500 years ago (there has never been found any archaeological evidence for prehistoric use of the islands), through turtle fishing by explorers and piracy by the English and the French and the Spanish. A long digression describes the history of shipbuilding, and a chapter is dedicated to the Wreck of the Ten Sail, the greatest shipping disaster in the Caymans. In 1794, nine British merchant vessels and their naval escort crashed into the windward reefs of Grand Cayman island. Only five men died, although some of the wounded died later; but the Naval captain and his crew were court-martialled for the expensive disaster.

History Whatever aboriginal inhabitants the islands may have had left no trace of their existence. The first human known to have laid eyes on the islands was Columbus, who in 1503 spotted a swarm of turtles around Cayman Brac and Little Cayman and named the islands Tortugas in their honor. By the time Francis Drake got to Grand Cayman in 1586, the islands were commonly known as Caymanas, after a Carib word for crocodiles. For the next century or so, the Caymans were used by lurking pirates and turtle-hunting sailors, but there were no permanent settlers until the 1660s, when a couple of deserters from the British army came over from Jamaica. In 1670, the islands became possessions of the British Crown, falling under Jamaican administration. The Crown turned a blind eye to the use and abuse of the Caymans by privateers, pirates and parrots. Aside from cotton farming and turtle hunting, the major early occupation was wrecking - the practice of salvaging the remains of ships that ran aground on the islands' many reefs. The most famous of these disasters is the Wreck of the Ten Sails, which occurred when a ship struck a reef in 1794, causing a chain reaction involving nine other vessels. According to legend, the Caymanians went to such lengths to aid the shipwrecked that a grateful George III granted the islands tax-free status then and there.

Attractions George Town Bursting with condos and bristling with satellite dishes, the capital would resemble a generic North American urban area were it not for its undeniably Caribbean seaside setting. George Town's attractions include a modest historical walking tour that takes in the remains of the late-18th-century Fort George and the Cayman Islands National Museum , situated in the town's oldest building. The museum, one of the Caribbean's best, features changing exhibits on the islands' human and natural history. The Cayman Maritime Treasure Museum has dioramas on the islands' seafaring days and a robotic Blackbeard that spins yarns about the Caymans' swashbuckling past.

Little Cayman provides us with a wonderful opportunity to realize our initiative of sustaining coral reef resources through education and community outreach. The reefs here are relatively pristine, the local human impacts are minimal and the island is largely undeveloped. These factors make Little Cayman attractive for scientists and students alike. Looking Ahead
For a long while, the Annex and the West Bay town hall fields were the main centers for playing football. In 1966, the Cayman Islands Football Association was formed, to administer the sport in the Islands, which by then had a growing domestic league. As the game grew, the need for expanding football facilities became evident. In 1982 the Annex Field, originally built by developer Mike Simmons, was further improved. Among the guests were then FIFA President Joao Havelange and the legendary Brazilian hero of the game, Pele. While on this visit, Pele officially opened the Donovan Rankine Field in East End, also built in 1995. The North Side field came in for redesign and upgrade in 1998/1999 and the Bodden Town Field is still undergoing construction.
