ARTIST’S STATEMENT My current work is a reflection of what I have experienced in life. The vessel form has always held my attention, even though I have made very few functional pieces in my career. My current work reflects my recent communing with the people, and their environments, of Africa and Amazonia Peru The pieces speak to me: “I am both old and young, I heal with my presence. My inhabitants create their daily sustenance, yet I am here to make them feel safe at the end of the day. I am of the earth, created by my residents, and I will return to the earth when they are done with me.” “Although my current residents will move on, I will always be here, awaiting the next participants, knowing that I am part of the endless circle of life”. I love the way clay responds to my touch … the way it comes alive as I reflect on the experiences of my life. I believe that these creations reflect how all of the peoples of the world are truly one, and that we all have one key commonality – that our dwellings and basic utensils are both important to our daily existence, but also that they represent who we are as inhabitants of this earth.

Alsager Pottery Traditional English Slipware Established 1978
Hand-thrown pottery decorated with coloured clay slips was made in English country potteries from the early 17th to the mid-19th century, when styles changed as a result of the industrial revolution. Staffordshire was one of the main centres of slipware manufacture and old Staffordshire slipware has its own distinctive character. We use traditional slipware patterns and methods adapted for modern use. Our pottery is all hand thrown in local red earthenware clay and we are happy to make individual items on request. Commemorative plates are made to order to mark weddings, christenings, anniversaries and other special occasions.

Dedza is the highest town in Malawi and Dedza mountain, reaching up to nearly 7,000 feet, forms the backdrop to Dedza Pottery. The slopes of the mountain are covered with a well managed pine forest that supplies timber and firewood to a wide region. It is a beautiful and unspoilt environment in which to create, and great care is taken not cause any environmental damage in the pottery operations. The pottery was started, as a private business, in 1987 by Chris and Charity Stevens. We export to individual customers all over the world and since 1997 we have been exporting to Oxfam Trading in U.K. As a partner of Oxfam we ensure that we follow the conditions of service for our staff drawn up under the "Ethical Trading Initiative". T his is a new category with an inventory that's sent me scrambling for books and experts in the vast field of Chinese, Burmese, Thai and Vietnamese ceramics. The most valuable source I found, a Mr . Jan-Erik Nilsson , is a wonder of not only knowledge but also super-human capabilities (or a closet of clones). He's been an enormous help to me but, still, we are honestly in the dark on a few of these pieces. This being the case, I have simply given the best description I could, included whatever theories we've hatched, and priced them as fairly as I'm able. I would welcome the input of all experts out there.
A potter, Udaipur. February, 1999. Chinese Chrysanthemum Porcelain Plates
These are jolly, slightly odd, ceramicware produced by China for the export market. I'm on a hunt for more of these (quite a few sold) but, at present, we do have three pieces.
Porcelain with underglaze cobalt blue decoration.
The pattern is of stylized chrysanthemum among devolved conch shells.
China, 19th century, southern kilns, perhaps Fujian Province.
