The binomial Deruta pottery like the one Deruta ceramics results to be surely indissoluble and characterized by this little village. If official documents do establish that Deruta pottery and Deruta ceramics has been produced since the XIIIth century, we have reasons to believe that the beginning of such an activity has to be established at least one century earlier. Anyway, at the end of the XIIIth century, Deruta had produced so many ceramics and pottery that it could pay the charges imposed to the city by Perugia in vases instead of money. At the end of the XIVth century, Deruta had for that reason hold a position of "regional" producer of pottery, ceramics and majolica and was, so to say, exporting. In fact, according to evidences, as early as in 1358 Deruta had exported more than one thousand vases in ceramics to Assisi, homeland of Saint Francesco, place where the need for pottery articles for the table and ceramic souvenirs for the pilgrims come to visit the tomb of the Saint was high.

The antique Italian pottery and the art of Italian ceramics are famous in the world for the quality of the ornament and the variety of the forms. The most antique Italian pottery were already realized during the pre-Roman period with such refined techniques that they could express in the ceramics and in the antique glazes an art and a taste for the representation of life scenes and also of abstract geometrical decorations.
The Italian pottery and ceramics
during the communal period
The art of antique Italian ceramics is marked by the historic and social evolution of the country; the ceramics, like the other most important arts, sees during the communal period the multiplication of styles provoked by the requirement of each communal center to define a proper identity as artistic as governmental. by
Chris Henley

Welcome to the pottery website of Chris Henley. I developed this site to share my work and ideas with others who also have a passion for creating things from clay. The signature shown above is my trademark. I live and work in Encinitas, California.
My clay work is done primarily on the wheel, but I explore other techniques as well. When firing, I typically use a gas fueled kiln, and favor ash and clay glazes fired to cone 10. I do explore other forming techniques, glaze materials, and firing ranges. As this page develops, I will be adding links to other pottery sites along with information and updated photos of my work.

Résumé

~Current Events~
~Thanks to all who came to my open house on the 17th, 18th and 19th and thanks to those who saw my work at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis. ~My next firing will take place in September 2002, hopefully after the first mosquito killing frost. Write me for more information. ~Zac Spates and I are planning to rebuild the fire box and make minor repairs to the first chamber before the next firing. Also we will rebuild the door wall of teh gozigama and improve the small stoke hole the new fire box will be larger to accomodate pots and will be a cross draft style (changed from bourry box). The volume of the kiln will be larger however I don't believe the firing time will be extended very much. Perhaps by four hours or so. ~Links to other pages~ Kirk Creed Mark Skudlerek
