Oil Exploited, Nature Disturbed by Rachel Naba
As modern technology grows, our need to consume natural resources increases. As existing resources are exploited and drained, the need for new resources becomes somewhat of an emergency. New lands are tested and surveyed, and any country that is found to have exploitable resources becomes very interesting to foreign governments and companies. Chad, a "poor" African country, has discovered oil in its lands, and foreign oil companies have seized the opportunity to exploit it. A Consortium consisting of Exxon, Shell and Elf have formed a 3.5 billion dollar oil project to collect, manage, and sell Chad's oil. They will build 300 oil wells in three fields in the Doba Basin of Southern Chad and transport it through 1070 kilometers (663 miles) of pipeline through Cameroon to the Atlantic Ocean for export. The pipeline will disturb the Deng Deng forest (semideciduous) and the Atlantic Littoral Forest (a tropical rainforest which is one of the most undisturbed in the world), will cross major rivers, bother wild and plant life, affect the ecosystem and health of the land, and disturb indigenous people, their lives and their farmlands. Oil spills or accidents will be devastating. The World Bank will financially support the "Chad Export Project". Chad and Cameroon have applied for over $115 million in loans (for equity investments, which do not necessarily guarantee profits), and the pipeline companies created for the project depend on the bank's support. Profits for the two host countries estimate at $1.3 billion (not even half of the project's total construction costs!) over the twenty-five to thirty year life-span of the project, and will be revenue from royalties, taxes, and transportation fees. The bulk of the profit will benefit the foreign oil companies.

Interview: 95bfm Interview with Peter McLennan for the Culture Bunker, 16 September 01 Peter McLennan: You're on the Culture Bunker and it's 14 minutes before 11. Joining us in the studio is local author Chad Taylor. His latest book is Shirker which is also published in the Italy and the UK and the US and he is currently the Sargeson Fellow - is that right? Chad Taylor: It's the Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship. What does that allow you to do as a writer? It's a residency, a local residency just in a building near the university. It's something that allows writers to work for between two and five months at a time. It's just money to write and a place to write from. And it's great. It's very, very quiet. I thought it would be good and when I got it I was very pleased to receive it. I've been there since August 31st and the amount of work I've done is a huge amount of work to the point where I was actually thinking last night maybe I should slow down a bit because I'm getting a bit tired... You get to work on what you need without the phone ringing and people asking you to do other things, which is great. Is that a luxury for you?

Why is it that porn sites are so popular? Well, aside from the inherent appeal to all ESPN viewers, porn sites know a few things about human psychology (and anatomy, too, I guess). One thing the builders of porn sites know is this: the Internet was built for speed and accessibility. Speed can be addictive and very powerful if used effectively. Porn sites give users quick hits (please insert pun here). They are addictive because they collapse the amount of time between each encounter with the ladies. If you don't like the blonde, then a brunette is just a click away. Satan uses speed every day to addict men and women around the world to the darker side of sexuality. Satan also uses accessibility every day to lure people away from righteousness. Satan and his cronies give Internet users quick access to something they want. We all know that postmoderns want spiritual stuff, so why is it that churches don't give them quick access to God? What postmoderns really want is raw God. We want a naked God. We want an arousing God whom we can see, feel, and experience. And by the way, we want it instantly. Give a postmoderns instant accessibility to God and s/he will become addicted to the One Most High (What, you think porn is more addictive than God? Get real.).

Crossroads, Seattle, WA, USA As church historian/futurist/author Leonard Sweet and others like him call the church to sail further out into the uncharted waters of our emerging postmodern culture, some fear the gospel ship is doomed to sail right off the proverbial edge of the earth and into oblivion. They believe all this talk of a "postmodern reformation" is either a passing fad or accommodating the culture. But like their predecessors who believed the world was flat, today's critics don't have enough information. Granted, there are the dual dangers of using "postmodernism" as a buzzword or embracing elements of it which are unbiblical. And, sadly, there are examples of both throughout the Christian community. So when you enter your local Christian bookstore and see a slick new book with a borderline "cute" title like AquaChurch , it's tempting to think Sweet is simply adding fuel to a trendy postmodern bandwagon. But having been impressed with

- February 1999 - pg. 6 Chad is originally from Meadow Lake and is the oldest of six children. His parents, Ernest and Helen, were positive influences on Chad and read him many stories as a youngster. These stories were often about Aboriginal legends and culture and Chad took them to heart. When he had the opportunity to see these stories in picture form or animation, it always upset him because they never seemed to do justice to the way he pictured them being in his mind. This would lead to a big project later in his life. Coming out of High School, Chad did not intend to be an artist. His passion was playing the guitar and was a big fan of Led Zeppelin and Van Halen. Music stands the test of time, as he says. During this time, Chad held various jobs ranging from a sawmill, which he hated, to setting up car shows and driving exotic cars, which he says was very enjoyable. He also had stints as a model where he posed for the Edmonton Sun as a Sunshine Boy. From 1992 to 1995, Chad was employed designing tattoos and album covers. This was the first step in discovering his talent. His mother saw his work and told him that it was too dark. He should do more positive work that was not so tacky. In 1995, he met Alvin McKay who had a big artistic influence on him. He liked Alvin's work because it maintained a true essence of Aboriginal culture and showed a quest for achievement. Other artists that inspired him were Frank Frazetta, Boris, Johnny Marcelin and Isaac Bignail. His brother was also an aspiring artist, but tragically, the fingers on his drawing hand were severed in a sawmill accident. This has led Chad to include fists and hands in his pictures to show his respect.

For me it's done if you can Breakdance and Raps, because I can break into da beat and can write my own rhymes. For the DJ wannabes, you can only do it if you buy a 'Scratching Machine' (not the real name, real name is 'turntables' ) and for graffiti I'm not quiet sure.. I can put the tags on the walls but my tags are not as lawa as U.S's or in the Too Phat's vid; Jezzebelle and Anak Ayam. So watcha waitin' for? Mastermind will show you how the elements getting done! 4 ELEMENTS by Mastermind 1.bBoy, the initial for Break Boy, Bronx Boy and Boogie Boy are quiet popular nowadays. Even though its popular almost 20 years ago in the U.S, Too Phat bringing tha Hip Hop Culture into life again (in Malaysia and that's for the music industry) after almost 10 years its disappeared and the music arena was controlled by Pop, Rock and Alternative and its genres. 2. dJ, the initial for Disc Jockey. But not the dJ in the radio stations, they are different kinda dJs who plays discs in clubs and whatever you can call a groove palace where everybody get down to the beat. T-Bone was Too Phat's dJ in case I think he is in the Phat Family with Malique and JZow. Kool Herc is the pioneer of the dJ thing in Hip Hop and Grand Master Flash is the starter of the scratching technic.
