"From Ireland to Chad: The Ambiguities of Globalization,"
published in National Jesuit News By William Bole If you were going through the exercise of picking two small or mid-sized countries with opposite experiences of globalization, you would hardly do worse than to come up with Ireland and the central African nation of Chad. The "Irish tiger" has lifted even those at the bottom rungs of its roaring economy. Chad is rated as the fifth-poorest nation in the world, afflicted by global markets and monetary policies (not to mention the internal demons of corruption and violence). Yet when viewed outside the usual prism of economic winners and losers, the two countries may seem less far apart, in their encounters with globalization. Both are showing how the global economy, even while holding out promise, could rupture a people’s sense of tradition and identity. In Ireland, the challenge comes from affluence and a global media culture. In Chad, it comes in the shape of a World Bank-supported oil pipeline that will run through ancestral lands. Ireland and Chad were among several countries highlighted in an October 16-20 (2000) gathering of Jesuits from 15 social research and action centers on five continents. They came together for a consultation of the Global Economy and Cultures Project, sponsored by the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. The four-year project pulls together a few dozen Jesuit centers worldwide. Participating groups are compiling narratives about the effects of economic globalization on local cultures.

The Place of the Elephant in the Culture and Oral Tradition in Northern Cameroon (Part I)
Due to the interaction of elephant with human beings, the elephant occupies an important and mythical position in the culture and oral traditions among the local population. Many tales are told with the intention to justify the behaviour of elephants in a given region. The most interesting and fascinating of these tales are those that attempt to give explanation to the origin of these elephants, their related human aspect as well as their relations with other animals.
The belief that marauder elephants migrated from Chad is generally agreed upon in this region. Far behind, before the elephants were signaled in this region, travelers from Chad were said to have told mythical stories about some gigantic animals; "even the most colossal of all the villagers was unable the reach or touch the back of this enormous creature with the hand".
The story of the arrival of the first elephants in the villages is also told with mythical vehemence. "The first elephant to arrive, got there in the night. Without the slightest noise nor did it destroy any farm. Just its footprints were conspicuously marked out on the ground. At dawn, these footprints, as large and wide as the human feet put together, were discovered by the villagers. These villagers thought that someone must have done it as a work of art. Speculations were made to this unraveled phenomenon. Finally, after a few days, the villagers saw the animal. It was a miracle".

Chad Ohlandt: Engineering in Taiwan
Remember cartoon rockets blasting off to the moon on cheese-gathering missions? Did you grow up hooked on the "Star Wars" space operas, picturing yourself as swashbuckling Han Solo? Meet engineer Chad Ohlandt, currently seeking a supporting role in the future blockbuster, "Journey to the Red Planet." GO After Chad's early exposure to intergalactic pop culture turned into a passion for space exploration, he began accumulating the technical know-how to devise new ways to power rockets. While learning Mandarin and traveling in Taiwan and China for a year, he added another life goal: bringing the Chinese on board an international mission to Mars. Chad Ohlandt has long dreamed of being involved in space travel and helping to plan a manned mission to Mars. Chad's proposed recipe for becoming a space mission planner: mix his engineering studies with world travel and language acquisition. He knows the qualifications for his dream job will include global project management skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues around the world. So far, this straightforward desire has met with heavy resistance from the English-centric American universities where Chad has been pursuing his engineering education.

Admissions Criteria The College operates a transparent admissions process. It particularly encourages students from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply. To read more about the College's admissions policy and criteria, follow this link.
Historic Setting
St Chad's College is located on one of the loveliest historic streets in Northern England. To the front is Durham Cathedral, and to the back are lawns and the River Wear. While the College is made up of the equivalent of eighteen historic listed buildings, the interiors are up to modern standards and the College is well-equipped.
Students By far the most important thing to know about St Chad's is our students. They are the College, and they come from every sort of background and from a host of countries. People expect smaller colleges in older universities to be exclusive or quirky (and the College does have its quirky bits), but we think we have the balance right in terms of keeping expectations high while encouraging students to have a great time.
Student Rooms
Almost every room in St Chad's is distinct. Some have fireplaces, some have incredible views of the river and city; some are hidden away in fourth floor landings with ancient beamed ceilings. Every room is furnished, and equipped with at least a sink. Many first year students share a double room (some of which are

Chad Happens
What the wait is teaching the nation
By NANCY GIBBS When we were children, we learned where democracy comes from, how the people came to rule, about the government of the many rather than the government of the few. But what good is that machinery if there is no majority? No one taught us what would happen if there were a tie. New Mexico has worked this out. If the voters deadlock, the law hands the outcome over to a game of chance: the candidates can flip a coin, draw a card from a deck or play a hand of poker ‹ assuming they can agree. Florida law allows for drawing straws. But this tie is elusive, imperfect as the election that produced it because when you are shuffling through 6 million votes and double-punched ballots and hanging chads and missing postmarks and the whole archaeology of human frailty, every count by machine or by hand yields a different result, each so close as to be all but meaningless. So the combat went hand to hand, both men clawing for every last vote. Ballot boxes were wrapped like presents in crime-scene tape; guards protected overseas ballots around the clock; and both sides all but accused each other of trying to steal the election. And so the only thing we know for certain is that our next President will be born in the margin of error.
