Abstract (Home)

Introduction During the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, the Office of Indian Affairs (OIA) made many attempts to educate Native Americans in American culture. The Office established schools on reservations, in and around the military forts near the reservations, and in some cases, Indian students were sent to all white schools off the reservation. This integration took its toll on many Native Americans through assimilation, for OIA policy was to get rid of traditional Native American culture. “The United States government established Indian boarding schools to detribalize and individualize Native Americans. They set out to mold a ‘successful’ student – obedient, hard working, Christian, punctual, clean and neatly groomed – who would become a ‘successful’ citizen with the same characteristics”. Secondly, through sickness and death. While attending government boarding schools, Native American children often became gravely illtuberculosis was the number one killer among Native Americans at the time. Prior to the inception of on reservation boarding schools, many Indian students were becoming ill, and in some cases, dying from being at schools off of the reservation, thus leading to the all inclusive boarding schools.

Pop Culture Mentos Sightings
Web Geek Chad was a contestant on Comedy Central's "Win Ben Stein's Money" in April, 1999, with an original air date of June 2, 1999. He was introduced with the Mentos FAQ as his claim to fame, and was later referred to as "Mentos crazed" by Jimmy. The epsiode number is 3039.
According to J.B. Nicholson-Owens, Janeane Garafalo was on the "Conan O'Brien Show" and they made a spoof of "The Fake Photographer" (#2). Janeane spoke of how odd the ads were, and J.B. says that the spoof was quite funny.
Janeane Garofalo must enjoy speaking of The Freshmakers because Fran Pelzman Liscio says that on Garofalo's recent HBO Comedy Half-hour special, she did an impression of someone watching a Mentos ad. It starts off with her face completely deadpan, and then she gradually looks more and more bewildered. Finally, she says, "Wha....? Is that guy a mannequin?...What are these, German?..." She also offers some interesting new commercial ideas for "Das Freshmacher" Comedy Central is currently re-running the special.
In the 1996 "Studmuffins of Science" calendar, Dr. August (Rob Elia) lists his "favorite current web site" as the Mentos web site. (Thanks to Chad Jones for reporting this)

Chad With one of the most painful histories in Africa, Chad is a nation with its foundations built on the precipice of conflict. A harsh climate, geographic remoteness, poor resource endowment and lack of infrastructure have combined to create a weak economy suceptible to political turmoil. In the 1980s it was classified as the poorest nation on earth. Now it's probably still in the bottom 10, but its apparent rise is due more to things getting worse elsewhere than better in Chad. The country is usually generously described as 'developing', and while there is a degree of stability and modernisation occurring in Chad, 'surviving' is probably a more apt term. The cities are still interesting and relatively safe places to visit for the careful traveller - nightlife in the capital is thriving with many popular bars - but visitors should always stick to main routes and keep a low profile. Intrepid travellers are currently able to visit the capitals of ancient desert kingdoms and other attractions in the country. Amnesty International decries the continued use of torture and executions by the government and various rebel armies, but - if it makes you feel better - these atrocities rarely affect travellers.

Khalsa explains, "We live in a culture of icon worship. For instance, my grandchildren will choose a product because it has a brandname. We are brand-oriented. We consume icons. The animal is an unlikely icon. On the most superficial level there's an animal right there. Sticking a big animal up there poses a question. What is it doing there? You might take a step closer. You might pause, start to take in more of the story. The animals are part of the story in the background. Its purpose is to make you look."
