Engineering Physics Program
The graduate program in Engineering Physics was one of the first Ph.D.-granting program in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. It is a research-oriented program which emphasizes the application of the principles of physics to the solution of technical problems. The student prepares for research in a chosen field by selecting appropriate courses in mathematics, engineering physics and other sciences. Other than the requirement of a minimum of 6 credits of graduate physics courses, 6 credits of graduate engineering courses and 3 credits of graduate mathematics, the master's student has a wide range of courses from which to select. The Ph.D. student must satisfy these same course requirements, with an additional 6 credits in Physics, 6 in engineering and 3 in mathematics. Thus, the Engineering Physics program is extremely flexible and offers each student the opportunity to formulate a program of study that most closely corresponds to the student's interests and needs. In the spirit of the flexibility of this program, faculty research advisors for Engineering Physics students come from a variety of departments within the University, depending on the research area. Brief course description
CNS/Bi/Ph/CS 187. Neural Computation. 9 units (3-0-6); first term. (Note that CNS 187 is a direct descendent of the former CNS 185, which is no longer taught.) This course investigates computation by neurons. Of primary concern are models of neural computation and their neurological substrate, as well as the physics of collective computation. Thus, neurobiology is used as a motivating factor to introduce the relevant algorithms. Topics include rate-code neural networks, their differential equations and equivalent circuits; stochastic models and their energy functions; associative memory; supervised and unsupervised learning; development; spike-based computing; single-cell computation; error and noise tolerance.
Required background
This course is rather interdisciplinary as it attempts to pull together topics in biology, physics, mathematics, and computer science. However, lack of background in one or more of these areas need not prevent you from succeeding in the course. We do require some basics: familiarity with computer programming in a high level language (ideally MATLAB), and knowledge of basic calculus, probability, linear algebra, and some familiarity with differential equations.

DESCRIPTION OF INNOVATION:
The Chaos course consists of a series of interactive Mathematica Notebooks available for each three-hour lecture/lab session, which takes place in the second year computing laboratory in the physics department. Mathematica is used as both a presentation environment and a computational tool for students to explore fractals and chaos.
REASONS FOR DEVELOPMENT/INTRODUCTION OF THE INNOVATION:
To improve student learning with "hands-on" experiences in the subject of chaos.
TEACHING/LEARNING AIMS:
Students are able to apply the theory concepts discussed in lectures using core codes presented in the Mathematica notebooks. This avoids tedious programming so that the students can concentrate on physics and insight. Students can explore the fractals and chaotic behaviors by changing various parameters in the equations to observe the change in the results. Moreover, the core codes are related to theoretical models described in the lectures in a transparent way and thus can be easily extended by students to study different chaotic systems.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES:
Transparent; easy to modify and to extend; cover the most essential concepts in the subject.
