Chaos Theory
To take a one week course with David Peat Chaos Theory, with its notions of bifurcation points, fractals, limit cycles, strange attractors, self-organization, solitons, autopoesis and the butterfly effect, has become a powerful metaphor over the last two decades. The theory has been applied to everything from the physics and biology to weather, stock market, earthquakes, population size, spread of disease, linguistics, elementary particles, psychological states, etc and has even crept into films and novels! It is difficult to find a field today to which Chaos Theory has not been applied, and in a range of uses from loose metaphors to strict calculations. Chaos theory is a branch of non-linear science that deals with relatively complex open systems, and systems that are displaced from stable equilibrium by means of a flow of energy, matter, information or, for example, money. In this the boundaries of Chaos Theory merge with those of Systems Theory, Complexity Theory, Rene Thom's Catastrophe Theory. Has Chaos Theory become overexposed? Are its metaphor's always been applied correctly? Does it promise more than it finally delivers? Probably it's too early to tell. At all events Peat has contributed, with essays and co-authored books, to the "sound and fury" surrounding Chaos Theory.

Search Chaos Theory Chaos Theory is the name mathematicians have come up with to describe the very complex way the world works. Much of mathematics invented up until now has been "linear", or related to a line. You could make equations about it, and figure out the answer pretty easily. But there were some areas that just couldn't be explained, like weather patterns, ocean currents, or the actions of cells. There were too many things going on to keep track of with linear equations. It almost seemed as if they were random, or "chaotic". Chaos theory is a way to mathematically describe and predict these types of events. This type of math would not be possible without computers, because the calculations are so huge and tedious. But computers are perfect for that task. C haos is a science of the real world. It is concerned with the big picture all around us things as diverse as the weather, the beating of the human heart, the stock market, population fluctuations, brain waves. Instead of particle physics, which explores the infinitesimally small building blocks of matter, chaos applies mainly to the universe we see and touch, to objects and events at a human scale. Much of the work of chaos involves finding hidden patterns, or predictability, in what people usually think of as random or "chaotic" processes things like the weather, or the rise and fall of the stock market. Chaos research has many ramifications. One of the most significant: understanding "chaotic" events can lead to predicting the future. Think of the possibilities in disease management, stock market analysis, weather forecasting...the list is endless. Much of the plot of the movie Drawing Down the Moon stems from the imaginative interweaving of witchcraft "magic" with chaos theory research. There are many similarities between the "disciplines" of magic and chaos. Both seek to make the impossible possible. Both attempt to make predictions about future events. In the movie, Gwynyth compares Joe Merchant's chaos research to "magic, scrying, divination." For fascinating information on the development of the science of chaos, we highly recommend the book "Chaos: Making a New Science" by James Gleick. This book actually inspired Steven Patterson, DDTM's writer/director, to some principals of chaos theory in the storyline of the film. Mr. Gleick's book is a revelation. It's a great read, it's accessible to non-math and non-science people, and every page of it sizzles with the excitement of this revolutionary scientific field. Steve also sent a copy of the book to Walter Koenig to help Mr. Koenig's preparation for his role as the eccentric, brilliant chaos mathematician "Joe Merchant."

Faith in Chaos Last year, director/writer Darren Aronofsky released the film Pi: Faith In Chaos http://www.pithemovie.com) . This film took the prestigious Sundance Movie Festival by storm. Pi tells of a genius mathematician named Max Cohen (played by actor Sean Gullette) seeking to uncover the patterns underlying all natural chaotic systems. Max, believing the stock market is a non-linear, dynamic, chaotic system, applies the principles of number theory to determine the workings behind the apparent random nature of market prices. What Max eventually uncovers almost destroys him. In the end, he rejects this knowledge and (believe it or not!) takes a drill to his brain. The movie concludes with him living in ignorance mildly content.

....and I'm 17 1/2, although the body is (ahem) much older. Born in 1962; you do the math.
I'm the one of our group who's out front the most; has the closest connection to the body; and does most of the external things during the day. I don't like to use the term "host," because that implies that this is my purpose in life. My purpose in life is to be Laura. Period, end of sentence. So let's forget the H-word. Yeah, Allegra 's with me most of the time, but you get the point.
So why is a 17 1/2-year-old "driving the bus," so to speak, down the road to our collective healing? I haven't the slightest idea. I just woke up one night around New Year's 1997 and found that I'd somehow been pushed up front to the driver's seat; the bus was in motion at the speed limit, and I was on a six lane highway during rush hour. The rest, as they say, is history.
I Hate Mornings It's not, however, how I want to spend my life. Certainly not caught up in the corporate world of Manhattan, commuting in every day to spend eight hours doing stuff that I think is totally meaningless. For what? $$Cha-CHING!$$

This essay will address a certain class of these arguments, whose sleight-of-hand consists in a definitional trick. My purpose here is not to make the positive case for pure laissez-faire , but merely to show that each pro-government argument is a non sequitur Anarchy is the absence of government, both in political science and everyday usage (it is the first definition given by Webster’s, e.g.). Chaos , in the context of social science, refers to lawlessness, or the absence of a relative degree of regularity in human affairs. (I say a "relative degree" because, obviously, virtually all humans will always obey the ‘rule’ of, e.g., avoiding someone with leprosy or not slaughtering every female in sight. The ‘laws’ to which lawlessness is opposed are generally meant to imply the sometimes irksome rules necessary for a civil society.)

    Chaos and Dynamics

Chaotic dynamics is a special subset of dynamics: chaotic systems show what is known as sensitivity to initial conditons. This means that two very similar starting points will rapidly begin following very different trajectories. Imagine balls rolling in a bowl, if you start tweo balls off in very slightly different positions with very slightly different velocities, they will still follow approximatly the same path for a very long time. But, if the bowl is "chaotic" (perhaps due to it's shape, or bieng shaken in someway), then even arbitrarily close initial conditions will diverge.

    Introduction to Chaos Theory
    I recently took a course on Chaos Theory as part of a summer camp at the University of Chicago . It was taught by Greg Huber ( g-huber@uchicago.edu ). If you have any difficult questions you might want to ask him. The first thing we did in our chaos theory course was to look at what happens to an initial value, x0, when a function, f(x), is repeatedly applied to it. We tried this with three functions, both with domain and range within [0, 1].
    The Shift Map
    The formula for the shift map is f(x) =
    x*2 for <= x
    x*2-1 for .5 <= x
    It turns out that this function can be understood by writing x0 as a "binary decimal". For example .1101 is 13/16, 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/16. Each iteration of the function is equivalent to shifting the decimal point right one place, and chopping off any integer part. Therefore, to understand this function, you just have to write x0 as a "binary decimal".
    The Tent Map
    The formula for the tent map is f(x) =
    x*2 for <= x
    x*-2+2 for .5 <= x
    This function can also be understood fairly simply. First, express x0 as a "binary decimal". Each iteration of the function starts by shifting the decimal point one place to the left. If the number is point something, you are done. However, If the number is one point something turn all of the ones in the number to zeros, and vice-versa. Therefore, the tent map can also be understood by expressing x0 as a binary decimal.
    The Logistic Map
    The formula for the logistic map is f(x) = r * x * (1 - x), where r is a constant. The height of the map is r/4, so r ranges from to 4. behavior of the logistic map depends greatly on the value of r. If r is between and 1, repeated iteration of the logistic map will eventually give 0. For r between 1 and 3, the logistic map will eventually settle down to fixed point. After three, more interesting things start to happen. For r just greater than 3, the logisitic map will start to bounce back and forth between two numbers. As r gets a little bigger, the logisitic map will go between four numbers. The number of points the logistic map settles down to will keep doubling until r becomes approximately 3.6. Then the logistic map will end in chaos. If you make a graph with r as the x-axis going from to 4, and the value the logistic map settles to as the y-axis, you get what is known as the bifurcation tree. It looks like this:
