Teachers and other youth leaders have stories that they have shared for years with the youth in their care. Parents too have stories that have been effective in teaching values to their own children. If you would like to take a moment to write down your idea, you can submitt it to this website so other parents and youth leaders could use your experience or insight to teach others. Perhaps you have observed an event in nature that can be used to teach a concept about life. Other sources of ideas might be sports, education, family life, or something from your profession or hobbies. Look at "Don't Get Trapped" for an example of a story taken from nature.     Using Stories About Heroes to Teach Values by Tony R. Sanchez November 1998 RECENT TRENDS IN VALUES EDUCATION There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning values standards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values. Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996). Prominent educators recommend that certain widely held values or virtues should be at the core of the school curriculum for the purpose of systematically developing the character of students. They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through "perspective-taking, moral reasoning, thoughtful decision-making, and moral self-knowledge" (Lickona 1993, 9). And they also urge the use of personal models heroes in history, fiction, and current events to exemplify and encourage emulation of particular virtues or desirable traits of character, such as honesty, civility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, self-restraint, compassion, tolerance, fairness, respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, responsibility for the common good, and so forth (Leming 1996; Lickona 1991).

    WHAT IS CHARACTER EDUCATION?
    Character education is the deliberate effort to help people understand, care about, and act upon core ethical values. It is based on the following premises:
  • Destructive youth behaviors such as violence, dishonesty, drug abuse, and sexual promiscuity have a common core: The absence of good character.
    People do not automatically develop good character. Intentional and focused efforts must be made by families, schools, faith communities, youth organizations, government, and the media to foster the character development of the young.
    Good character
    consists of moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action: Understanding core ethical values, caring about them, and acting upon them. These values include respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, diligence, self-control, caring, and courage.
    These core ethical values are not mere subjective preferences like taste in music or clothes. They have objective worth (they are good for us whether or not we know it), universal validity, and a claim on our personal and collective conscience. They are affirmed by religious traditions around the world and transcend religious and cultural differences. They are rooted in our human nature and express our common humanity.

    Promoting character education is a key component in reducing school violence and discipline problems. As Superintendent, I helped champion North Carolina's emphasis on teaching our children values along with the three R's. I want to build on North Carolina's success by passing federal legislation to strengthen character education initiatives.     (CBS) "I have a dream that one day my four little children will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character," said Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963.
    When it comes to the contents of students' characters, many parents and teachers are worried. The killings at Columbine High School and elsewhere have raised fears about kids' behavior and prompted new lessons about virtue.
    Nationwide, schools are starting to teach not only reading, writing and arithmetic, but the fourth and fifth r's as well: responsibility and respect. Twelve states now require that character be taught in the classroom. Character is part of the curriculum at the Martin Luther King Jr. School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At Boston University, where Dr. King received his doctorate in 1955, the Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character helps schools put character in the curriculum.     UNI News Service The value of recess in elementary education programs is a topic often debated in an era when schools are being called upon to provide instruction on an increasing number of topics. A longtime elementary principal at the University of Northern Iowa's Price Laboratory School says he "would come down on the side in favor of recess, but it's not an argument in isolation." "If you don't look at recess in the context of how you think about teaching and learning, it may not be a productive use of time," says Lynn Nielsen, now working with UNI's Office of Student Field Experiences. "Time is certainly a pressing issue in curriculum development at the elementary level, but how we think about teaching and learning is one of the things that guides the discussion," he says. "If a district is motivated to eliminate recess because they have so many other things they need to teach, then they're probably in a mode some refer to as 'cars on the train' this train that these teachers are pulling just keeps getting more cars added on to it every time the district sees a new need." Nielsen says in a lot of districts, there is a curriculum solution for every problem. If there is a problem with drugs in the community, there is a curriculum package to be taught. Various organizations send material on topics from agriculture to seat belt safety.
