Chemical Engineering Richard L. Stover, Ph.D. Chemical Engineering Links University of California, Berkeley American Institute of Chemical Engineers Chemical Processing on the web What is a Chemical Engineer? HOME a) An Engineer who manufactures chemicals, b) A Chemist who works in a factory, or c) A Glorified Plumber? The correct answer is d) "All of the above." The term "Chemical Engineer" does not describe the type of work a Chemical Engineer performs so much as it reveals what makes the field different from other fields. All engineers (and plumbers!) employ mathematics, physics, and the engineering art to overcome technical problems in a safe and economical fashion. Yet, it is the Chemical Engineer alone that draws upon the vast and powerful science of chemistry to solve problems. The strong technical and social ties that bind Chemistry and Chemical Engineering are like nothing seen in the other branches of engineering. This marriage between Chemists and Chemical Engineers has been beneficial to all concerned and has rightfully brought the envy of the other engineering fields. Chemical Engineers are versatile employees able to handle a wide range of technical problems. Today there are about 70,000 practicing Chemical Engineers in the United States. In the history of the profession (including those alive today) there have been only about 135,000 American Chemical Engineers. This means that over one half of all the Chemical Engineers who have ever lived are alive and contributing to society right now! Chemical Engineering is not a profession that has to dwell on the achievements of the past for comfort, for its greatest accomplishments are yet to come.

Quoted from the Saskatoon Sun , Sunday, June 2, 2002 (p. 30) "Two University of Saskatchewan students are the winners of one of Saskatchewan Research Council's (SRC) Technology-In-Action Award for students. Gaetan Gobeil and Karthik Selvan were jointly awarded the $2,500 scholarship in Saskatoon. 'SRC launched the Technology-in-Action Award to recognize and encourage Saskatchewan students who use science and technology to develop innovative and practical solutions to the challenges faced in Saskatchewan,' SRC Director of Business Development Gerry Brown said. 'The work that Gaetan and Karthik did during their studies at the University of Saskatchewan is an example of just that.' The project the students won the award for is a fuel ethanol plant simulator designed using Microsoft Visual Basic. The simulator encompasses the fields of chemical engineering, biochemistry, commerce and computer programming. It is a unique technological solution which could help in the development of fuel ethanol plants in Saskatchewan.

Be an Entrepreneur - Be a Chemical Engineer
Although most Chemical Engineers work for companies, industrial organizations and government agencies, there are also excellent opportunities to be self-employed or start a business. Many niche markets exist In Canada and abroad for Chemical Engineers with specialized expertise. They work as consultants, advisers, researchers and, increasingly, as suppliers of unique services and specialty products. Using modern Information systems, design tools and equipment, individual Chemical Engineers can now accomplish what used to require large groups of engineers and support staff. Chemical Engineering, therefore, provides excellent opportunities for entrepreneurs. Compiled by the Department of Chemical Engineering Queen's University from material supplied by many Chemical Engineering organizations.

Penn Engineers Develop Fuel Cell That Uses Liquid Diesel, The First Such Device To Run On A Widely Available Fuel
PHILADELPHIA – Chemical engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a prototype fuel cell that’s the first to run on a readily available liquid fuel source, in this case ordinary diesel fuel. The work nudges fuel cells closer to viability, offering the promise of compact, portable power sources that offer much more bang for the buck than combustion engines or existing batteries. Scientists, corporations and the military are all interested in fuel cells, which are far more efficient and less polluting than other energy sources. Work to develop commercial fuel cells, however, has been hindered by the limited fuel sources on which they have been known to run. "There used to be a saying that you could run a fuel cell on any fuel as long as it’s hydrogen," said Raymond J. Gorte, professor of chemical engineering at Penn and the lead author of a Journal of the Electrochemical Society paper reporting the finding.
