overview
Farmers combine land, water, commercial inputs, labor, and their management skills into practices and systems to produce food and fiber. To sustain production over time, farmers must make a profit and preserve their resource and financial assets. Society wants food and fiber products that are low-cost, safe to consume, and aesthetically pleasing, and wants production systems that preserve or enhance the environment. These often competing goals and pressures are reflected not only in the inputs made available for production, but also in how the inputs are selected, combined, and managed at the farm level. Increasingly, farmers are facing pressures to change from conventional production practices to more environmentally friendly practices that encompass critical aspects of crop production, including pest management nutrient management soil management , and sustainable production systems . ERS research examines the critical role of economic and environmental factors in the adoption of management practices and technologies, including the use of conservation tillage, integrated pest management, precision farming, nutrient testing, organic farming, and biotechnology.

AGRICULTURE REPORT - July 30, 2002: Chemicals on Organic Food
By George Grow
This is the VOA Special English AGRICULTURE REPORT. Farmers who grow organic food do not use chemicals to increase their crops or control insects and disease. However, a new study shows that chemicals can still be found on organically grown food. The study showed that organic crops had far fewer chemicals than other fruits and vegetables. The publication Food Additives and Contaminants reported the findings. [Image Removed] (Photo - Scott Bauer) Organic food is one of the fastest growing areas in American agriculture. Industry officials estimate that American stores sold almost eight-thousand-million dollars worth of such food in the year two-thousand. That is a twenty-percent increase in sales from the year before. Many Americans believe that eating organic food is more healthful than eating food grown with chemicals. Some people are willing to pay more for such food. Yet several reports claim that some organic foods have just as many chemicals as other crops. Scientists with the American group Consumers Union supervised the new study. Consumers Union publishes Consumer Reports magazine.

Productivity trends in agriculture chemicals Horst Brand and Kelly Bryant O utput per hour of labor in the manufacture of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides rose at an average annual rate of 2.2 percent between 1972 and 1986. This rise reflected an increase of 1.3 percent a year in output and a decline of 0.9 percent a year in employee hours. The improvement in productivity compares with an average annual increase of 2.5 percent for manufacturing as a whole. As the following tabulation shows, productivity rates for the four individual agrochemical industries varied widely from the average for the group, with establishments producing nitrogenous fertilizer recording output-per-hour advances of close to 4 percent a year and establishments specializing in the mixing of fertilizers registering no strong trend at all. The pesticide industry stood in between, with a rate nearly equal to that for all manufacturing. Average annual rate (percent), 1972-86

    http://www.key.ca/resources/2001_regina/chem_agriculture.html
Chemicals used in Agriculture written by Jim Grela Grade: 9 Science Objective:
    • Have students understand which chemicals are included in agriculture, how they are selected and used and the effects for farming as well as the environment.
    Materials:
    • Information handouts on chemical fertilizers
    • Map of Saskatchewan
    • Handout on soil regions of Saskatchewan
    • Contact numbers for agriculture specialists
    Procedure:
  • Have students identify soil regions of Saskatchewan. Then determine bodies of water on the map. (One would also need to find out about underground water systems.)
  • Determine the needs (in general) for a soil region (types of chemicals that could be used, especially fertilizers).
  • Contact an agricultural rep. to determine if soil requirements would be close.
  • Then determine the effects of chemicals on plants.
  • Next determine the possible effects of the chemical on the other plants and animals.
  • Determine how the water would affect the transportation of these chemicals
  • All this information could be placed on a colour coded map of Saskatchewan to show effects of chemical usage.
  • Variations:
    • field trips: farmers field, ag-chemical dealer, PFRA presentation

    71. From The Ground Up - Lesson 3
Lesson 3 agriculture and chemicals. Mealy bugs on plant leaf. recognize the significantrole of synthetic chemicals in today's agriculture. Focusing questions.
    http://www.gatewest.net/~green/from/l3.html
    Lesson 3: Agriculture and Chemicals
    Mealy bugs on plant leaf
    The lesson objectives are to:
    • create an understanding of the different inputs used in agriculture
    • analyze different methods of pest control and their impact on the environment, the economy, and the health and well-being of society
    • recognize the significant role of synthetic chemicals in today's agriculture.
    Focusing questions
    • What are pests and how do we try to control them?
    • How successful have we been?
    • What part do these pests play in our eco-systems?
    • How sustainable are existing methods of pest control?
    • Are the alternatives to chemical control sustainable?
    Students should be able to:
    • identify the spectrum of uses our society has for chemicals
    • recognize the advantages and disadvantages of synthetic and natural pest control techniques
    • describe the characteristics of pesticides and name some of those used in the home, in the neighbourhood, in agricultural, and in industry;
    • identify how public concern for the environment affects the agriculture
    Introductory Activities
    • Ask students to research the use of chemicals in their homes, yards, and neighbourhoods. Have them look at how they clean their clothes, drive their cars, brush their teeth, wash their hands, etc. One example, nicotine, is a chemical used both as a consumer product and a pesticide. It can be produced organically. Is it necessarily sustainable? Ask them what kinds of things don't have a chemical base.

    ABSTRACT
To reduce the incidence of accidental poisoning from agricultural chemicals - Tocumwal Community Health developed a program "Caution with Agricultural Chemicals." The programme aimed at creating awareness amongst farmers and chemical users of the risks and the need to use safe practices. This was achieved by 2 public meetings - mass media promotion - poster competition in local schools and printing of a poster. Free blood and urine chemical testing clinics were held - after the Safety Promotion. The pilot program has now been taken up by other Community Health Teams in the area. The program will be promoted annually to continue supporting farmers and chemical users in safer use of agricultural chemicals. (Author abstract)
