Farm chemicals can cause injury or harm if used improperly. Chemicals include: pesticides; sanitation and variousother products used in barns, workshops or in the fields. Certification by Nova Scotia Department of theEnvironment is required by anyone who purchases and applies agricultural pesticides. Transportation, storage anddisposal of chemical containers all pose hazards which can affect human health and the environment if correctprocedures are not followed. Every worker who has any contact with hazardous materials (chemicals, cleaners, pesticides, fuels) must be trained in the WHMIS system and have Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) readilyavailable.
Spot the Hazard
Read and follow labels and MSDS data supplied by the manufacturer for information on hazards, the requirementsfor personal protective equipment, and safe handling, transport, storage and disposal for each chemical. Ensurechemicals are stored in a locked, well lit and well ventilated area, separate from other chemicals that may cause themto react dangerously; and, be aware that solvents in some chemical concentrates can escape as harmful vapors unlesscontainers are well sealed.
Assess the Risk
For each chemical hazard identified, assess the likelihood of an injury, harmful reaction or a hazardous incidentoccurring. Assess also whether any injury or harm is serious and imminent, and whether steps to minimize oreliminate the risk should be taken immediately. Consider proposed control measures for their likely effectiveness. The MSDS will help you properly transport, store, use, dispose of, and clean-up any leak or spill of a hazardousmaterial.

84. Food Contaminants; Agriculture, Chemicals, Pesticides, Metals, Isotopes
In their study, Alternative agriculture, they show that farmers can reduce theirreliance on chemicals while maintaining crop yields, and profitability.
http://www.nutramed.com/foodquality/foodcontaminants.htm
Home Products and Services Medical Information Orders ... Modular Nutrition Food Quality Food Contaminants Let us consider one of the alarming facts of the late 20th century. Our food supply is contaminated by a variety of agricultural chemicals, water, and air pollutants. We have been told that we must live with a degree of chemical contamination, since our industrialized, agricultural industry depends on chemical technology to feed us. Stephen Gislason MD We regularly postulate that Agent X i n the food supply is causing a health problem, or promoting the problem. The diagnosis of food-related illness always raises the question of food contaminants. The problem is that we never know what role contaminants play, and we have no technology readily available to find out. The neglect of imponderable factors in our food supply is surely one of the contributors to ignorance about, and denial of, ill-defined illnesses in contemporary populations. Surveillance may detect chemical contamination before the food reaches consumers, but it is unrealistic to expect that government monitoring alone can assure an uncontaminated food supply. It is also unrealistic to believe official reports that the incidence of contamination-related illness is very low, since the majority of the potential problem is concealed from official view. What does the presence of industrial and agricultural chemicals in our tissues mean? If you have a toxin in your body, which should not be there, what assumption are you going to make? These chemicals are good metabolic poisons, and so you are going to assume that they will in some way alter the way your body works. Agricultural chemical residues in the body mean increased risk of illness until proven otherwise.

AGRICE Agriculture for Chemicals and Energy, France - Research Activities Introduction
The emergence of new markets for agricultural products in the fields of energy, chemicals and materials requires the deployment of significant resources for long-term research. These new outlets also necessitate greater coordination between diverse actors including multidisciplinary research teams, agro-industrial companies and firms in user sectors of activity (petrochemicals, chemicals, materials, etc). In this perspective, the scientific interest group AGRICE was created by the public authorities and eight partners in France in 1994. AGRICE presently brings together the following partners:
  • professional organisations of producers of oilseed crops (ONIDOL), grains (AGPB) and beets (CGB) government ministries of agriculture, industry, research and environment

86. Spraying Pesticides, Sprays And Chemicals In Uk Agriculture
spraying and pesticides, a guide to practice and activity of farms in the UK withdiscussion on chemicals, coshh and protective clothing in uk agriculture.
http://www.ukagriculture.com/crops/spraying/spraying.html
Spraying of pesticides There are few subjects in UK agriculture that have aroused as much suspicion as the spraying of pesticides. Popularly characterised as "highly toxic", pesticides have struggled to gain acceptance in the minds of the public despite the fact that all have been exhaustively tested and are often less hazardous than many of the chemicals that we consume in our daily diet. In this article we look at application in practice. There are four main sorts of pesticide that are used in the UK. These are; fungicides that control disease, herbicides that control weeds, insecticides that kill insect pests and growth regulators that prevent plants becoming too tall. When used sensibly in the farming system they provide us with healthy and affordable food and help maintain biodiversity (lots of wildlife) by allowing us to use less land to supply the food we need. All pesticides must be kept, by law, in a secure locked container or shed that will contain a spill in the event of an accident. In addition all pesticides are classified under COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health) and given a hazard rating which is clearly displayed on the can along with comprehensive instructions for the operator. When handling pesticides, operators wear protective clothing as a matter of course even if the pesticide has no hazard rating and is technically harmless.
