Several research organizations participated in the WP-3D aircraft component of the Nashville 1999 study sponsored in part by the Southern Oxidant Study. These organizations are: Aircraft Operations Center, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Dept of Commerce; Aeronomy Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Dept of Commerce; Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, University of Colorado; National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR); Brookhaven National Laboratory; and University of Denver. There were 12 flights in the mission over the period from 06/26/99 to 07/19/99. Data obtained by these research organizations while on board the WP-3D aircraft comprise this data set. Measurements focused on obtaining an improved understanding of the processes that control the formation and distribution of fine particles and ozone. Measurements included in the data files are: aircraft location data, aerosol particle characteristics; upper air meteorology; CO, ozone, NO, NO2, NOy, HNO3, SO2, CO2; NMHCs; photolysis rate coefficients from Actinic flux measurements; PAN, PPN, and MPAN; and formaldehyde. Readme files accompany each set of measurements. Three study themes were:
  • Local vs. regional contrasts- similarities/differences between regions of the country and the relative importance of local emissions versus transported pollution.

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) operated two enhanced (Level 2) surface-level monitoring stations during the 1999 Nashville/Middle Tennessee Field Study. One of the level 2 stations is located on the top of the James K. Polk Building in downtown Nashville. The other level 2 station is located about 40 miles west of Nashville near Cumberland Furnace in Dickson County. Gas measurements (5-minute averaged concentrations) include sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), nitrogen oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and total oxides of nitrogen (NOY). The meteorological measurement package includes wind speed (WS), wind direction (WD), temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and solar radiation (RAD). C hemical property data for reactive intermediates in solution are being compiled, evaluated and collected into databases, focusing on free radicals and excited states produced in radiation chemical studies. Electronic publication of these databases on-line facilitates easy retrieval of timely kinetic data. Scientists and engineers modeling chemical systems involving free-radical intermediates use these values as input to their calculations. Complementary data from the photochemical literature are also included in this information retrieval effort. A CCOMPLISHMENTS
A compilation of rate constants for reactions of aliphatic carbon-centered radicals in aqueous solution has been completed and published. The center provides on-line resources for searching the RCDC bibliographic database, and numeric databases containing condensed-phase triplet-triplet absorption spectral data, and rate constants for inorganic radicals in aqueous solution.
A world wide web (WWW) site has been developed for the RCDC , containing an updated critical review of rate constants for reactions of hydrated electrons, hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl radicals ( OH / O ) in aqueous solution, and a compilation of kinetic data on the decay and reactivity of singlet molecular oxygen in fluid solution.

EPA SON Precipitation Chemistry Data The following discussion was taken from personal correspondence from Luther Smith, Ph.D., to Richard Artz, NOAA Air Resources Laboratory, Silver Spring, MD, 23 December 1997. Monitoring Sites Precipitation samples were collected at the following sites: Site Latitude Longitude Elevation (ft) Georgetown, DE 38°38'09" 75°27'21" Lum's Pond State Park, DE 39°34'00" 75°43'51" Elms Environmental Center, MD 38°12'06" 76°22'31" Hurlock, MD 38°37'30" 75°52'30" Rocky Gap, MD 39°43'12" 78°38'03" Greenbrier County, WV 37°48'49" 80°30'46" Charleston, WV 38°20'30" 81°37'10" Wheeling, WV 40°07'07" 80°41'54" New Manchester, WV 40°31'42" 80°34'32" Data Analysis and Processing Approach The EPA State-Operated Network (SON) data were treated in a manner as close to NADP data as possible. Though the data were at least nominally similar to NADP, the network had a somewhat different protocol and provided a somewhat different data set than NADP. The process of data "clean-up" included eliminating duplicate observations, checking observations for suspicious or erroneous information, converting codes to "NADP-like" form, and checking agreement between the documentation and the data sets themselves. Where possible, incorrect entries in an observation were changed based on a consideration of all information in the observation and, if appropriate, observations near it in time from the same site. Changes involving the raw data were limited to correcting dates when buckets were either removed or placed on a collector.
