Quality Materials Science In order to accomplish these purposes, the division consists of three subdivisions: Materials Science, Applied Chemistry, and Quality Materials Sciences. Materials Science provides advanced programs on fundamental chemical and physical sciences. Applied Chemistry covers inorganic and organic materials chemistry, and Specialty Materials Sciences offers advanced studies on chemical and physical properties of quality materials and their performance evaluation. The division of Quality Materials Science provides extensive research training programs relating to the fundamentals and applications of chemical and physical sciences. Namely, a wide variety of academics belong to this division, so general views on science and technology concerning materials are taught in addition to professional training. A joint educational program with other faculties is also available. Division Subdivisions Quality Materials Science Materials Science Applied Chemistry Specialty Materials Science l Materials Science The Materials Science covers the basic field of the Quality Materials Science. Taking the relationship to Physics and Biology into account, this subdivision focuses on electron, atoms, and molecules as fundamentals of materials, and aims to provide the students with advanced education on inherent characteristics and structures of materials and principles of their formation not only in the basic field of Chemistry but also of Biochemistry, making the best use of practices and exercises. Materials Science consists of five fields: Fundamental Physics and Chemistry, Molecular Reactions Chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, Inorganic Materials Chemistry, and Quality Biochemistry.

    The III-rd International Astronomy Olympiad took place on October 20-27, 1998 at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) in North Caucasus. There were two official languages at the Olympiad - English and Russian. Problems were prepared by the Organizing Committee in these two languages but the team leaders were responsible to translate problems to native languges of participants (i.e. to Bulgarian and Portuguese ). Character of the problems to solve were analogous to ones of the Olympiads

    Predicted structure of the telomerase inhibitor RHPS4 (magenta) bound to human telomeric DNA when folded into its four-stranded form. The Computational Modelling and Informatics Research Group applies state-of-the-art methodologies for understanding molecular structure and interactions to problems of pharmaceutical relevance. Techniques range from atomistic simulation methods to mesoscopic modelling approaches chosen according to the scientific problem in question. Projects range from largely theoretical studies of molecular structure and dynamics to those specifically designed to illuminate and build upon concurrent experimental studies undertaken in collaboration with other research groups, particularly Drug Discovery and Cancer Chemotherapy, and the Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis.
    The major research themes of the group are:
    • Modelling of protein structures for rational drug design
      Studies of the structures of P450 isozymes are being used to explain how novel anticancer compounds being developed in the DDCC group are activated, and to help assign function to newly-discovered P450 genes. Studies on the DNA repair enzyme O6-alkylguanine DNA alkyltransferase are being used to design new inhibitors as potential anticancer agents. Another target for rational anti-cancer drug design are the NAD(P)H:quinone acceptor oxidoreductases (NQOs) which have elevated levels in certain tumour types.

    Selected Publications

    Our group is interested in understanding the electronic structure of molecules that either do something useful or something interesting. We focus mainly, but not exclusively, on transition metal containing systems. Using quantum chemical methods to first derive a detailed understanding of what makes the molecule behave the way it does, we ask what we need to do to control its chemical behavior. The ultimate goal is to devise novel and rational design strategies for better anticancer drugs, robust industrial catalysts or new materials. We are also interested in large-scale simulations of metalloenzymes to understand how they work and identify potential ways of replicating their reactivity in industrial settings with biomimetic complexes. Most of our research is done in close collaboration with experimental chemists who help us refining our computational models and testing our predictions.

    Crossroads of Mathematics, Informatics and Life Sciences
    by Jan Verwer and Annette Kik The 20th century has been a period of dramatic technological and scientific breakthroughs and discoveries. A general feeling amongst scientists in all areas is that developments in science and technology will go on, perhaps most notably in the life and computer sciences as testified by the current rapid progress in bio- and information technology. New subdisciplines have been created such as computational biology and bioinformatics, which are at the crossroads of biology, physics, chemistry, informatics and mathematics. CWI is active in a number of projects with life science applications while other projects are forthcoming.

Dr. Zahlten is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Frankfurt (M) Medical School and founded with another partner the company "Bioscience Management Consulting" prior to joining Revotar AG.
    The successful discovery and development of a new antiinflammatory therapeutic agent is the result of a team effort, based on outstanding competency, and motivation of individuals of the research and development.     The 54th Pittsburgh Conference Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, Pittcon, will be held at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida, US, from March 9-14. The conference and exhibition will showcase the latest advances in laboratory science together with the latest equipment. The organisers of Pittcon expect to attract 30 000 attendees - primarily analytical, research, and process chemists, spectroscopists, and other lab professionals - to Orlando for the largest conference and exposition for laboratory science and instrumentation in the US. The first Pittcon was held in 1950. The members of the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) and the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) staged a joint technical meeting in Pittsburgh. In addition to a display of instruments by fourteen exhibitors fifty-six technical papers were presented. There were 800 attendees, and much to everyone's delight there were sufficient funds after the conference for a celebration featuring five gallons of ice cream and six apple pies. The Pittcon organisers say they have assembled a comprehensive program of technical papers and short courses to run alongside one of the largest technical expositions in any scientific field.
