Preventive treatment with antibiotics appears to be more effective for severely ill patients
The benefits of treating patients in intensive care units with prophylactic antibiotics appear to increase with the patients' severity of illness. This finding is from a meta-analysis reported in Critical Care Medicine by Xiaolu Sun, M.D., and colleagues Douglas P. Wagner, Ph.D. and William A. Knaus, M.D. of the University of Virginia. The study was supported in part by a grant from the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (HS07137), for which Dr. Knaus was Principal Investigator. Dr. Knaus explains that these severely ill patients, especially when they have long ICU stays or are on mechanical ventilation, are extremely vulnerable to hospital-acquired (or nosocomial) infections. These infections are a major cause of sepsis ("blood poisoning") and subsequent failure of major organ systems. The meta-analysis examined 23 studies involving a total of 4,142 adult ICU patients. Taken together, the studies showed that ICU patients at high risk of death who were treated with prophylactic antibiotics had a significantly lower mortality rate than patients who did not receive prophylactic antibiotics. The degree of antibiotic protection was related to the degree of mortality risk of the ICU patients at the time of study entry. Details are in "Does selective decontamination of the digestive tract reduce mortality for severely ill patients?" by Drs. Sun, Wagner, and Knaus, which appears in

Introduction
Chicken Pox is an ubiquitous and extremely contagious viral illness. The primary illness, characterised by a generalised skin rash, is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus. Recurrence of the infection results in a localised skin rash, otherwise known as shingles or Herpes Zoster. Chicken Pox, often confused with Small Pox in earlier times, occurs seasonally and in epidemics the world over. Humans are the only known reservoir. The virus is spread by the respiratory route and is a common infection in children.
Cause and Pathogenesis
Varicella Zoster virus is an enveloped virus of the herpes family. Chicken Pox occurs in susceptible individuals who are exposed to the virus after intimate contact. After entry through the respiratory route, the virus replicates, reaches the lymphatic system and then the blood stream. Roughly two weeks after the virus entry, a diffuse vesicular skin rash is seen. It is believed that the virus lodges in the sensory nerves after the rash clears only to reactivate at a later date, several years later, to cause herpes zoster.

Chicken pox vaccine mandatory for children
Ana Patejdl
The Daily Illini The Illinois General Assembly Joint Committee on Administrative Rules voted to make chickenpox vaccinations mandatory for children entering kindergarten and day care after July 1, despite opposition from a group concerned about the safety of the vaccine. The committee supported Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. John Lumpkin's recommendation for the vaccine on April 10, after two years of deliberation. Barbara Alexander-Mullarkey, Illinois Vaccine Awareness Coalition spokeswoman, said the requirement was passed despite lack of proof regarding the safety of the vaccine. "I don't understand how (Dr. Lumpkin) can in all conscience OK a vaccine that he or the manufacturer cannot produce a study on long-term effects for," Alexander-Mullarkey said. She also expressed concern about ingredients in the vaccine, which is produced by Merck and Company. She said the vaccine contains aborted fetal tissue cells, fetal bovine serum and hydrolyzed gelatin. "I question the source and country of where fetal bovine serum and hydrolyzed gelatin come from," Alexander-Mullarkey said.

Aargh!
Here I am in my thirtieth year, working hard, playing hard, taking a little exercise (very little), eating well (very well indeed) - I was not ready to be struck down with a strange debilitating illness. I started feeling a little funny on Thursday 16th, but, like a good little soldier went to work on the Friday. However, by lunchtime. I'd fell off my chair several times and when I came around gibbering in a pool of sweat I decided it would be better if I made my way home. Having spent Friday night and Saturday day with a temperature of about a million, sleeping fitfully, only moving to change the dripping sheets (and turning the mattress over on one occasion) I awoke on Sunday to find myself breaking out in a foul plague of boils. Of course I panicked, I rang the Doctor's but all I got was a recorded message and an emergency number, but rather than ring him up at home and risk incurring the full flow of his renowned sarcasm, I rang around some friends who, by majority diagnosed Chicken Pox. I rang my Dad and Auntie and asked them if I'd had it before and drew a complete blank, so I thought I'd look it up on the Internet and see what I'm in for [see links at bottom of page] . This scared me even more, according to various sites I could look forward to complications such as encephalitis, hepatitis and pneumonia, I could be hospitalized and may not recover for over a month! As it turned out I recovered in a couple of weeks, but none of the sites prepared me for the different stages of the illness, which is why I've written this page, in the hope of shedding some light on what to expect.

Spring is the time for chicken pox. Barnard is no exception; Health Services saw its first case of chicken pox this year right after spring break. What does this mean for other students? Chicken pox is quite contagiousin families about 75% of siblings who have not already had chicken pox will get it if a brother or sister does. The most contagious time is before the rash appears! Thus, quarantining does little good to keep the illness from spreading, although the bumps are contagious until they crust over. The incubation period is two to three weeksthat is, if you are susceptible and exposed to chicken pox, you will not know for two to three weeks whether or not you will become ill. Illness varies from almost no symptoms except the rash to high fevers and feeling quite ill. The rash usually begins centrallychest, trunk and face, then spreads to arms and legs. The bumps will usually be at all different stages (red bump to pustule to crust) at the same time. You should be evaluated in Health Services if you think you have chicken pox, particularly if you have a cough or trouble breathing. Chicken pox is the least dangerous of all the childhood illnesses unless you have a significant underlying problem with your immune system.

Who should not be vaccinated? Are there any side effects associated with this vaccine? What is the chicken poxor varicellavaccine? This new vaccinevaricella is the medical name for chicken poximmunizes children against chicken pox. It's only been available in the United States since 1995, so you may not have heard of it, and you certainly didn't receive it when you were a child. Instead, you probably remember your own itchy bout of the most common childhood disease. Symptoms of chicken pox resemble those of the common cold: Your baby may have a runny nose and develop a mild fever . Next comes a rash that may look like small insect bites, usually starting on the scalp and trunk, then moving to the face and legs, and eventually covering most of the body. In a few days, the raised spots turn into blisters and the rash turns itchy. The blisters will crust over and heal on their own, but most children will scratch. Is it really necessary to be immunized for it?

Question:
Can chicken pox be treated?
Answer:
Yes. The drug acyclovir, a prescription drug, has been approved by the FDA for use in treating the symptoms of chicken pox in people over 2 years old. The drug should help reduce the severity of chicken pox symptoms, especially in older children and teenagers, if taken within 24 hours of the rash 's first appearance. This drug is generally only used in severe cases of chickenpox and in patients who are immunosuppressed (cancer patients, transplant recipients, etc.) Ency. home SpecialTopic C Please read this Important notice

Chicken pox doesn't come from chickens. This and other facts are tucked inside a creative story about the classic childhood illness. Jess is having fun the first few days with the chicken pox but soon the itching and midnight oatmeal baths become commonplace. Jess longs to go out and play but must stay in her pajamas.
