Whether a child is still a bicycle passenger traveling with a parent or adult on an approved child safety seat or just beginning to try riding under adult supervision, it's never too soon to start teaching her or him the basics of bicycling safety.
Although preschool cyclists do not have the cognitive skills necessary to deal with complex cycling situations, it is vital that this age group begin learning basic safety rules alongside fundamental motor skills. Getting a head start on safety now will put kids on the track to smart lifelong cycling.

Cautions
Because kids' cognitive abilities- skills necessary to safely handle complex traffic situations- are still developing, children ages 5-8 are advised not to bicycle on busy streets or major arterials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children in this age group stick to cycling on sidewalks only Beginner cyclists should only bicycle with adults when learning to ride.

Peer Review Status: Externally Peer Reviewed Injuries are the number one cause of death for children in the United States. Each year childhood injuries result in 20,000 deaths, 600,000 hospitalizations, and 16 million visits to emergency rooms, with an associated cost of approximately $165 billion. Almost half of the injury-related deaths of children involve motor vehicles. Other causes of unintentional childhood injuries are drowning, burns and scalds, choking, firearms, falls, poisoning, and sports. The vast majority of unintentional childhood injuries are preventable. Children at a higher risk of injury include males, children with previous serious injuries, children in families with low income, and children in families with young mothers. Among adolescents, alcohol and drug use are significant risk factors. For additional information on safety, refer to

Safety Services
CPS provides a variety of free safety services to benefit customers in the CPS service area. CPS Locator Service
Before you dig in the yard, call for the free CPS Locator Service. It's the law! Avoid personal injury and expensive repairs by dialing the One Call System of Texas at (800) 545-6005 before beginning your construction or landscaping project. CPS will locate and mark your electric and gas lines free of charge. Please allow up to 48 hours for the locating service before beginning excavation. Free Safety Presentations
CPS offers free Public Safety Awareness programs to customers in the CPS service area. To schedule a free safety program, call (210) 231-TALK (8255) . Programs are available for age groups ranging from elementary school children to adults. See our complete listing of available programs for all age groups on the CPS Kids site. Report Safety Hazards
Treat all fallen power lines as if they are energized. It's impossible to tell if a line is live by simply looking at it. Live wires don't always twist, writhe, snap or spark. But they do kill. So please, don't touch the line or anything that's touching it. Warn others to stay away and call CPS immediately at (210) 353-HELP (353-4357) to report.

The Facts on Organ Donation Who can become a donor?
All individuals can indicate their intent to donate.(Those under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian's consent.) Medical suitability for donation is determined at the time of death. There are no age limits on who can donate. The deciding factor on whether a person can donate is the person's physical condition, not the person's age. Newborns as well as senior citizens have been organ donors. How do I express my wishes to become an organ and tissue donor?
1. Indicate your intent to be an organ and tissue donor on your driver's license.
2. Carry an organ donor card.
3. Most important, discuss your decision with family members and loved ones. If I sign a donor card or indicate my donation preferences on my driver's license, will my wishes be carried out?
Even if you sign an donor card, it is essential that your family knows your wishes.Your family may be asked to sign a consent form in order for your donation to occur. If you wish to learn how organ donation preferences are documented and honored where you live, contact Carolina Donor Services. They can advise you of specific local procedures, such as joining donor registries, that are available to residents in your area. What can be donated?

The event, held at URNER’S television kitchen studio on March 19, showcased the new video training series for child care providers and parents that models the many age-appropriate ways that children can be included in the meal planning and food preparation process. Information gathered from the 2002 CCCC annual parent and provider surveys identified a strong desire for information and training related healthy meals and snacks for children. The Child Care Productions (CCP) and the Child Care Food Program Nutrition Outreach project (CCFP) recently collaborated to meet this training need and created the Kids in the Kitchen video training project. The Kids in the Kitchen video series was filmed on December 17, 2002. The two shows within the series are entitled: "A Snacking Good Time" and "A Meal With My Friends."
