Welcome to the Authorguru's special place for little ones.
I have set aside the best corner where kids can visit for coloring pages, games, information, addresses to write to authors and news on upcoming books.
There's plenty of sunshine and fun in this little nook, which is guarded by the craggly branches of the giant old oak tree through the window.
Right now you can find addresses for authors and illustrators for children's books ranging in age from picture books, juvenile fiction, to young adult. I'll be adding more as soon as I can, so let me know if you have any ideas or authors that you like best.
Children's authors love to hear from their young fans. Here are some tips to help you write your letter. Remember always be polite. You can ask questions about their writing, even if it is something you didn't understand. This shows them that you read the book and care about what they wrote.
Tell the author some of these things:
  • Who are youintroduce yourself to the author
  • Why you are writing to them
  • What books you've read
  • Which is your favorite
  • What you like best about his/her writing
  • Why you like his/her writing and books
  • How and why did you first pick his/her book to read
  • Why did they write the book
  • Ask a question or two you have about what happened in the book or what happened to the character after the book.

NYC Young Writers' Picks for Top 10 Best Sites by
Authors of Juvenile and Young Adult Literature
We love books. We love authors. This page shows our picks for the top 10 best websites by authors of juvenile or young adult literature. We spent months visiting every author site we could find. Hundreds! Three directory sites that were especially helpful to us were Sharyn.org Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Children's Book Council Some of the authors on our list are famous. Others aren't yet. The one thing they all have in common is an excellent website. What do we mean by "excellent"? Well, if there's one thing we looked for more than anything else, it's a sense of uniqueness. A lot of author sites we visited were good, but not really unique. After visiting the first few dozen, a lot of them started to blur together in our minds. The ones that made the final cut stood out to us as having distinct personalities all their own. So who are we anyway? We're a bunch of kids who met at a young writers summer workshop, who got together to start a creative writing club. We meet twice a month under the guidance of our workshop instructor, Mrs. Stein, who also edits this page for us. We write everything from poems to stories. Here are the author links in alphabetical, by last name, order. There are some really great author websites out there, so it was really hard to choose just 10. Only "official" author websites were considered for this list. This means that we didn't consider any fan pages. There are some terrific illustrator sites out there too, but we didn't consider them for this list unless the illustrators are also authors. We also kept our list to present day authors.

O'DELL, SCOTT
May 23, 1898-October 15, 1989
Author Biographical Statement: 1963 Biography from More Junior Authors 1999 update Scott O'Dell, whose first book for young people, Island of the Blue Dolphins, won the Newbery Medal and the Rupert Hughes Award in 1961, was born in Los Angeles on May 23, 1898. His father, Bennett Mason O'Dell, was an official of the Union Pacific Railroad and the horizons of his mother, May Elizabeth Gabriel O'Dell, were, he says, "bounded by the walls of her home." He was brought up in Los Angeles, San Pedro, and Long Beach, California, and "was never far from the sound of the sea." After graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, Mr. O'Dell attended Occidental College, the University of Wisconsin, and Stanford University. For several years he worked in the motion picture industry, first as a technical director for Paramount, and then as a Technicolor cameraman for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on the filming of the first Ben Hur in Rome. While in Italy, he attended the University of Rome and wrote a first novel which he never published. Returning to the United States, Mr. O'Dell became a newspaperman, a book reviewer, a frequent contributor to West Coast periodicals, and an author of both fiction and nonfiction for adults. While doing research for an informal history of California, Country in the Sun, he found an article about a young Indian girl, Karana, who spent eighteen years alone on the island of San Nicolas off the California coast. This article led Mr. O'Dell to further research and eventually to write Island of the Blue Dolphins, a fictional reconstruction of Karana's years on the island, narrated in the first person.

Notes About This Project In the fall of 2000, Jerri Garretson, owner of Ravenstone Press and a former children's librarian and author herself, responded to a suggestion from her husband, Peter, that a project to identify children's authors and illustrators who are, or who have been, librarians, would make an interesting web project and presentation subject. She began her effort to identify these creative people by posting a notice on the SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) listserv requesting that subscribers who were in this group contact her, or let her know about those who fit the description. The response was outstanding. She also contacted other groups she thought might have knowledge of librarian-writers and illustrators. In early January 2001, she posted notices on the child_lit and PUBYAC listservs, and was quickly innundated with many more names. Jerri would like to thank not only all those writer-librarians who contacted her, but all the helpful members of SCBWI, child_lit, and PUBYAC who contacted her with suggested names.
